Sturm vs Macklin: Your scorecard

Post by Crease »

I had it: 116-113 for Macklin.
And here is the breakdown of how I seen it:

1st: 10-9 Macklin
2nd: 10-9 Macklin
3rd: 10-9 Macklin
4th: 10-9 Macklin
5th: 19-9 Sturm
6th: 10-9 Macklin
7th: 10-9 Sturm
8th: 10-9 Sturm *
9th: 10-9 Macklin
10th: 10-10 **
11th: 10-9 Macklin ***
12th: 10-9 Sturm

Sturm offered very little at the beginning, I think he was startled at the intenity of Macklin...
But certainly, Macklin ruled the first-half of the fight.
And that factor alone should have been very telling.

*= I give the 8th to Sturm because he landed the cleaner punches, but Macklin was far busier.

**= I scored the round evenly, but in truth it could have went either way.

***= Although Watt give the 11th to the champ, I though Macklin was too gutsy and outworked Sturm.

How do you gents have it?

IMO Macklin, whilst much harder working, was simply ineffective, Sturm was more effective and thats why he won the close rounds IMO.

Even if I do score all the disputed rounds (8th, 10th, 11th) in Sturm's favour, the fight would have been really close... In all probability it could have been scored a draw then.

Hell, I could even forgive someone (though not agree with thwem ) if they squeezed the fight to Sturm by a round. (Something like 115-114 or 114-113).

But Sturm winning by 4 clear rounds? That is a laughable.

Same as the first card here but I had Sturm winning the last four for a 115-113 win.

114-114. I don't have a round breakdown, I was tipping away in my head as the fight was going on. I need to watch it again.

I thought the 9th round was pretty clear for Macklin.

Yeh that's true. The Valuev fight was different in that Valuev wasn't really a star attraction so it was easier for them to score however they liked. Against a star like Klitschko, haye is gona get no favours whatsoever.

I had Macklin by one. I wouldn't call it a robbery like a lot of people are.

Sturm's crisper shots, home fans and two judges vs Macklin's work-rate and one judge.

116-112 is harsh on Macklin (I did predict that's what the judges would probably give)

1st: 10-9 Macklin
2nd: 10-9 Macklin
3rd: 10-9 Sturm
4th: 10-9 Sturm
5th: 19-9 Sturm
6th: 10-9 Macklin
7th: 10-9 Sturm
8th: 10-9 Macklin
9th: 10-9 Macklin (Cound have gone either way on my card)
10th: 10-9 Sturm
11th: 10-9 Sturm
12th: 10-9 Sturm

Final card 115-113 Sturm. I thought Sturms work was cleaner and better. I tend to usually score towards the more aggressive fighter as well (Scored Degale vs Groves as slight Degale win due to Groves negativity) but in this fight Sturm landed enough to counteract that.

I'm doing this from memory and a l may have got the 9th and 10th mixed up, but I was expecting 116-112 cards (as the crowd would have influenced the judges on the close round). Definitely had it even after 4 and even after 8. Personally I was surprised to see one card having Macklin win it.

I had it level. Gave Sturm the last 3.

Tremendous effort by Macklin, I feel for him.

:OhYes:

Last round was probably the clearest of the fight!

Sturm sneaked it for me. Definitely don't think Macklin did enough to take his title. I could see the draw.

116-113 Macklin. Sturm didn't do anything in the first half of the fight and only landed single shots, although decent shots it just wasn't enough to be winning the rounds.

Those of you who scored the fight in Sturm's favour? Why?
You don't score points for covering up, which is what Sturm seemed to spend most of the fight doing.

I scored it on the night 115-113 to Sturm because I knew, as does pretty much everyone, that judges seem to score fights "a little funny" in Germany.

But I knew that that wasnt the correct scoring but thought that that is how the cards would read.

So watched the fight again in full (the German TV broadcast) and scored it again, and I actually thought Matt looked even better on reflection than I originally thought.

1. M
2. M
3. M-
4. M-
5. S
6. M-
7. M-
8. S
9. M
10. S
11. M-
12. S

= 116-112 Macklin

The ones with the dashes are ones that a judge could have possibly given Sturm if they were looking for reasons to score to him.

linked below is a list of how others saw it.
