Manny Steward

Post by youngrell »

Is it just me or does Manny seem to be gutted he's not Haye's trainer instead of Wlad? Every interview or presser I've seen with him talking he always seems to talk about Haye and his admiration for him more than his own charge. Even when talking about the fight he says Haye's name first.

I also thought, while it is very true, it was a bit inappropriate to say at the presser yesterday that Lennox was his best heavyweight, while Wlad sits next to him the week before the biggest fight of his career. He doesn't seem to be helping Wlad much at all during the build up. Does he see training Wlad as just a job?

You are spot on I think Manny loves Haye's style but is getting paid a shitload to train a robot.

Perhaps he's just being respectful of Haye's power and ability and also doesn't want to talk up his own fighter too much, fearing he may get a bit over-confident.

This could be true and I did think that, but I honestly think Manny looks like a man picking up a nice pay day everytime Wlad fights but couldn't really care less about the guy, not like when he trained Lewis and of course Hearns who he loved

If I was fighting in a huge fight like this, I would much rather have Manny in my corner than Adam.

Great post. Was thinking exactly the same thing myself and could see the way Manny was looking with admiration when Haye spoke at the Press conference.

As someone mentioned he must have a certain amount of embarressment to train the Ring Heavyweight Champion who is deemed too boring to be shown on the very channel he commentates for and has effectively killed Heavyweight boxing in America.

Of cause the Trainers fee he picks up must more then soften the blow.

It was another silly stunt from Haye and his team - but it wont stop me supporting him because, I honestly believe that when the cheques get paid in to all their accounts no one in either camp will really care about the cheap pre-fight tricks.

Manny has improved Wladimir the same way he did Lewis.

Since starting the thread earlier Haye has now claimed Steward has offered to train him if he fights Vitali.

Good observation from me or has Haye been reading my post and thought it good mind games? Haha

If that is true, Manny is pond-life and I'd like to think boxing journalists would tear him a new one. If it's not true, Manny should set the record straight ASAP.

Either way, it's the first 'mind game' Haye has put out that I think is clever.
Manny has claimed there is no truth in it. I agree though, good mind games that to cause a rift in the camp.

Saad and I were discussing the things Manny was saying last night, he was very frank about Wlad's opponents and Lewis being the best HW he's trained. It did seem funny the way he came out with these things, it did have the feel as though this was his last fight with him.
Perhaps he feels Haye is going to win? Not a great confidence booster to Wlad either way

He probably likes the fact that Haye will always try to knock his opponent out (except Big Val), and in one of Wlad's recent fights Steward had to practically beg him to finish his opponent when he was clearly there for the taking.

Manny was equally talking up Barerra prior to the Naz fight. He loved his display against Salud as a tune up. Constantly said we saw that Barrera is a multi dimensional fighter with more than one style.

If I was a trainer I would try to be as positive as possible about the abilities of my fighter's opponent. It could make a win for us seem more impressive.

Yup. Stewards playing hype. The latest from the Haye camp is "Manny want's to work wiih me". That smacks of desperation. Haye and Co. are all but confident imo.

Stuff like this causes genuine disharmony, true or otherwise, and that's why it's a rare example of a Haye announcement I give him credit for - probably somebody else's idea.

Yep, no doubt about it, money is his god now.

He hasn't produced a fighter from scratch.

From what I've heard about his predilictions, he needs all the money he can get.

I think Manny is also desperately frustrated by Wlad's refusal to let his hands go. He is a trainer who likes aggressive power boxing, always has done. Hearns was the apogee of his style.

He used to admonish Lewis for this too, though Lewis was like a shark on PCP compared to Wlad.

Manny was very positive about Chisora too when Wlad was supposed to be fighting him. I think Manny just likes to give honest assessments of boxers - nothing more sinister than that.
