Cubans won't be competing, since they don't have the funds... :( Was looking forward to seeing my friend's son win gold at 63kg...

Are you sure the Cubans will not be attending,it is unlike them to miss a world championships.
The deadline for entry in the Worlds was June 10.

The championships start on Wednesday and looking at the entry lists,it is disappointing to see the Cubans and the United States have not entered. Both countries have had or will have their national championships inJuly/August.
The very highly rated Cuban trio Alexei Guibert,Felix Mario Savon and Armando Martinez are a loss for the tournament and it would have been good to see the likes of Jesus Luna,Gary Salazar and Lou Grant test themselves at the highest level.
Russia have,as expected, tinkered with their squad bringing in a virtually different team but if anything are stronger, only Vladinir Krasnoshein keeps his place.
England and Ukraine have replaced their european champions with two very talented youngsters,Archie Sharp comes in 110lbs instead of Euro champ Pat Mccormack who was beaten by Sharp in the English Nationals.
The Ukraine bring in multi-title winner Olexandr Melenchuk in place of Victor Petrov both very talented.
Expect Turkey,Azebajan India Uzbekhistan and Ireland to be in the medals whilst the hosts Kazakhstan have a strong team
Dominica and Ecuador send 12 boxers between them mostly Pan American junior champions and that is a very long journey and one or two might surprise
My very tentative picks in a very open looking tournament are
46 Georgian Tudor Georgia and Elnur Shafidza Azebajan
48 Masud Yusifzada Azebajan and Olexandr Melenyuk Ukraine
50 Naveen Kumar India and Archie Sharp England
52 Manish Kaushik India and Shamil Checherov Russia
54 Norbert Herceg Hungary and Artem Melkonyan Russia
57 Tekin Inak Turkey and Bernard Barsony Hungary
60 Telman Gafarli Azebajan and Israil Madrimov Uzbekhistan
63 Kaiyrgeldi Dautibek Kazakhstan and Isaac Mcleod England
66 Alexandr Agafonov Russia and Volkan Karsli Turkey
70 Olexandr Khyzhnak Ukraine and Daudet Baigabatov Kazakhstan
75 Dimitar Tilev Germany and Zelim Imadaev Russia
80 Ruslan Yurichenko Russia and Zaur Mutallipov Kazakhstan
+80 Oybek Shariapov Uzbekhistan and Khozi- Akbar Mamakov Russia

Pat Mccormack and Isaac Mcleod both won at least World bronzes to go with their European golds this afternoon
Mccormack now faces another european champion Victor Petrov, who has moved up a weight, in the semis who interestingly beat Pats brother Luke in the European final.
Mcleod faces Ju-hyun Song from Korea in his semi.
Martin Conroy lost 5-6 to German Dimitar Tilev and Fraser Gorn who has been a revelation here lost 8-9 to Madrimov from Uzbekhistan. Both winners fancied to win gold.
John Stokes lost 6-10 to Russian Artem Melkonyan and Aidan Mcglynn was outgunned 7-22 to another Russian Vizirkhan.

Isaac Mcleod has reached the final where he will meet the Russian Tamerlan Mamomedov.
In his semi he defeated Korean Ju-Hyon Song 13-10.
Mamomedov swamped his Kazakhi opponent Dauitbek 20-6 and is clearly formidable.
Pat Mccormack fights later today.
Russia has four boxers through so far with four more yet to compete.

I'm in Astana looking forward to today's finals. I've been impressed with quite a few boxers. Mostly Phillippines southpaw Eumir Marcial at 52 kg, who knocked out his opponent in the semifinal with a right hook, and russian Alexander Agafonov at 66 kg who's been very dominant.
Others to follow are little australian warrior Clay Waterman at 46, indian Naveen Kumar at 52 kg, dominican Huascar Ramirez who was blatantly robbed in his quarter-final and uzbek super heavy Oybek Sharipov who's very powerful but faded against the russian.
The english finalists are both very skilfull but also very boring to watch.
The kazakh team has been a little dissapointment however they can still win two gold medals. It's a pity the cuban team isn't here they have some real good boxers and woul've won some gold medals here. Only Dominican Republic is here from the American Confederation.

Impressive knockout victory for Alexander Agafonov in the final. Tremendous bodyshot did the job. By far the best boxer of the tournament. He started out as an orthodox boxer. In the semifinal and final he turned southpaw and knocked out his opponents :o . Asror Vohidov from Tajikistan also impressed with his speed and dazzling combinations. He gave his russian opponent a real boxing lesson. Eumir Marcial looked sluggish in the final and escaped with a narrow 9-7 victory. Almost 6000 spectators at the finals, I guess it won´t last long before another major championship is held in Astana.
