Hats of to jimmy tibbs he a trainer from the old school a real boxing trainer no fancy stuff just real boxing training. Tell me if i am wrong boxing is one sport that has never real change 2 guys get in the ring to hit each other and the fans like to see ko's. there to much training put these days on fancy training with sports doctors, pills drinks you name it and fighters will tell you they are pushing cars around and doing less road work and less sparring. Boxing training is about running sparring hitting the bags good ground work and maybe a little modern training brought in i look forward to your views.

I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with sports learning from science and adapting accordingly. The reality is we know huge amounts more about the human body, performance etc, so it seems crazy not to harness those insights to ensure boxers are training more efficiently. Where I'd agree though, is that it seems on occasion that some of the core fundamentals are abandoned in the chase for the 'new, new thing'. Strength and conditioning knowledge, as well as nutrition, has come on leaps and bounds, so this should be utilised, but never at the expense of neglecting technique.

Not enough boxers do weight training for fear of putting on weight. They are still in the dark ages in that respect. Done the right way weight training can make you powerful with no added body weight.

Agree, the old methods created the greatest champions though nothing wrong with adding to the training handbook.
Still can't get my head around people who don't spar before a fight, crazy..

I think Jimmy Tibbs is an outstanding trainer. Seems really down to earth and gracious about his achievements as well. Very surprised he often doesn't get mentioned in the best british trainer discussions on here. Seems that some people always like the 'fashionable' trainers (Gallacher etc) over him.

Developing and sharpening a boxer's sport specific skill-set should always be a training priority. This is obvious. The best way to do this is by sparring at varying degrees of intensity and technique drilling (bags, pads, footwork drills, defensive drills etcetera). I believe that any trainer who failed to make this sort of work make up the majority of training volume would be failing in their duties.

Supplementary work to develop a boxer's 'chassis, frame and engine' should be tailored to the demands of the sport. In endurance sports the term 'junk miles' is used to describe work that has been done by an athlete for no net gain. 'Junk miles' should be avoided. They take up time that could be spent on productive training and/or recovery. The same applies to boxers. If there is a more effective, specific, affordable, time efficient method of training to the one you are currently doing, you would be a fool not to use it.

As to 'pills' and 'drinks'. The sport supplement industry is just that: an industry. There are 18-year-old kids in gyms who use more supplements each month than Mr. Olympia contenders. (although illegal, the same applies to steroids. Some of the cycles - and cycle durations - that average Joes use would make a ripped 22 stone bodybuilding professional baulk. Genetics are the most important factor in how much muscle one can gain). That is not to say that there is no place for supplementation. Just like training, education and understanding is key. You need to know what you are putting into your body and why. If you don't know what's what, you need to ask somebody who does and usually it is better if that person does not have a vested interest in selling you a product or using you as a marketing angle.
This is the best post I have seen on any forum for a long while.
