Khan v Mayweather: what do we think now?

Post by ALI »

A few fights back i dont think anyone would have taken this fight seriously, but now there is no doubt in my mind Khan is one of the biggest threats out there to Mayweather. His defence and his chin have improved so much over the last couple of years that i'm sure he's now ready for such a challenge. All he needs is a fight or two at 147lbs to get himself comfortable at the weight, then its on.

His defence and his chin are sound, i would not expect him to crumble early against Mayweather's pot shotting, it would be as the fight wears on Mayweather might start to dominate, or score a KO. The pace Khan fights at, his high workrate and his lightning quick attacks would prove a very big obsticle for Mayweather. On points, Khan would have a great chance.

Its hard to believe what i'm about to say, but i think if Khan keeps looking this good, Mayweather might not want any of it!

I hate Khan with a passion but i have to give credit where it is due. After the Prescott KO who would have thought he would be widely considered by many as the best fighter at 140 and knocking on the door of top 10 p4p?

He just gets better and better and the frightening thing is he is only 24. If Khan carries on progressing like this i think he will be ready for Mayweather in a year or 2.

The only way he beats Mayweather is if Floyds skills have declined dramatically between now and a possible Khan fight !!

We will be able to get an idea of that after Mayweather fights Ortiz and then hopefully Pacquaio. Mayweather is now 34 years of age and all these long lays offs are going to take there toll as he gets older. In my opinion, floyd has around 2 years left, at which he can fight and maintain the level at which he has fought for the past 10 years. Beyond that time frame, he will become susceptible to a defeat.

At this moment in time Khan isnt ready for Mayweather. So far he has faced Kotelnik, who was a decent world champion. but nothing special, Malignaggi and Judah, both of whom were six years out of their prime and essentially living off their names and lastly Maidana, a fight i still dont know how Khan survived, in terms of that 3 minute permanent wobble dance in the 10th round.

Mayweather has the skill set to negate what Khan does, take away his A game, no other fighter has been able to do that to khan. Mayweather has superior defensive skills, better counter punching awareness and is all round a too experienced fighter for Khan. For Khan to gain the experience will take time, Bradley fight, Alexander fighter, Maidana re-match, then say Ortiz or Berto at welterweight, before he can look at facing Mayweather. These fights will take around 2 years to complete and even if he does win then all, which i doubt he would, then Mayweather i doubt will still be around.

If Khan fights mayweather within the next year, he will lose

My opinion of Khan hasn't really changed.

He's an offensive whirlwind that has a basic defence which allows him to succeed against a certain level of opposition, like Zab, Maidana etc.

I think he'd have half a chance against an older, inactive Mayweather, who hasn't really faced a live, young body at welterweight. It's old men, limited fighters - all smoke and mirrors for the past six years. Of course Floyd might just stand him on his head and make me sound stupid.....

At this moment in time he's nowhere near ready for Mayweather. As someones already pointed out he's got to clean up the 10st division then establish himself at welterweight first. Even though Floyd is fighting once a year he'd still be too much for Khan he's got the style to give Khan problems he's never faced before.

Really?

After last nights win i think its very fair to say Khan is the #1 at 140lbs right now, he has two belts to Bradley's one, and he's willing to put them on the line, Bradley's not.

He has beaten two belt holders in Kotelnyk and Judah, plus beaten the likes of Malignaggi and Maidana. The only other fight for him at 140lbs is Bradley, its obvious Khan's the one desperate to make it happen, even offering a full 50/50 split on everything. Thats very generous considering its Khan who will be generating most of the revenue for the fight. If Bradley wont fight him on those terms then there's nothing else he can do other than move up. He'd be waisting time hanging around any longer at 140lbs.

If thats what happens. then he'd deserve nothing less than to be remembered as 2011's #1 fighter at 140lbs.

Khan was clinical last night - After Bradley, I see no reason why Khan can't compete with both Mayweater and Pacquio.

Khan has the best hand speed in boxing and very good skills, he's taller than Floyd, and he's not past his best, so I definitely think that he has the tools to give Mayweather a lot of trouble. In my opinion Mayweather is overrated in the sense that many people think he is some sort of untouchable boxing god; the reality is that he has struggled against multiple fighters who at the time were not much better or not better than Khan is now. Mayweather was badly hurt by a past it Mosley, just squeaked by a past it DLH, lost several rounds to Judah, and got a gift against JLC. Of course no fighter breezes through all of their opponents, but a lot of people seem to think that Mayweather would breeze through Khan, and I disagree with them.

I also find it odd that people seem to scoff at the idea of Khan fighting Mayweather. Khan is #1 at 140 now and easily top 10 p4p. Aside from Pacquiao, Khan is the best and most credible opponent that Mayweather could face.

I like Khan's skills and he's getting better without question..

For me though - Mayweather is too big a task and would be Khan everytime for my money.

Unless Khan waits till Money is too old of course!

Who should he have fought then?
Who should Mayweather have fought?

Cotto
Margarito
Mosley - a younger one
Williams
Clottey
Berto

Any three/four of those - instead of a fake retirement.

And Tszyu when he was king of the weight division Mayweather was in, but Floyd opted to fight Arturo Gatti. There's even an argument out there that he should have stayed at 130 for a bit longer to take on Freitas and Casamayor, who were both giving Mayweather serious arguments for the king of 130 at the time. But as far as that's concerned, I buy Mayweather's explanation that he could no longer make weight. What can't be denied, though, is that since the Castillo II, Mayweather has fastidiously avoided every major challenger through all the weights he's fought at. Mosley was the first proper welterweight he's fought, for Christ's sake, and he was about 117 on his next birthday, and clearly can no longer pull the trigger.

It's pretty clear now that Mayweather will fight anyone to avoid fighting Pacquiao, who he's clearly terrified of. If Khan wins another fight, and Mayweather makes it past Ortiz, I would say a fight between the two is inevitable -- as long as Khan doesn't look too impressive.

I read an interview today Khan says he's staying at 140 till he's 25 then moving up. Khan-guerrero could be a possibility?

You've really gone and done it now

I agree with your point though. Him vs Casamayor at 135 would have been a cracker I feel.

It's not that he didn't have the ability to beat these fighters either, his demolition of Corrales was an absolute masterclass. I guess the trappings of being undefeated proved too much for him, especially when the big money started rolling in.

When people say he's one of the best ever it grates with me, considering his slate above 135 is average at best. Gatti, Bruseles and Corley sucks, Khan has a better record at the weight than he does. Even if he beats Pacquiao, Manny will go down as the greater fighter of the two, having beaten the three great Mexicans (possibly each of them twice come November :oo ) and several welterweights who Floyd wanted nothing to do with.

That's without adding his wins at the lower weights too.

Anyway..... I'm going off on a tangent

Let's get the fight made!

Khan's improving rapidly, we don't know how Mayweather's doing but he can't get any better can he if he only fights once every 18 months. Let's see how he fares against Ortiz...

Thing is, Khan could carry on improving, beat Mayweather down the line in say a year or two and he still won't get any credit as people will say it was Floyd's age/lack of inactivity, not Khan's improvement that won him the fight.

Remember, Floyd didn't look all that against a shopworn Mosley and got staggered and has been off for ages. I'd not be surprised if he really has a tough fight against Ortiz that'll have everyone clamouring for a Khan v Mayweather showdown.

Will depend on the money Khan can generate. Mayweather will want huge money, a large chunk of UK PPV (after getting his fingers burnt against Hatton) and the majority of US money. If the Primetime viewing figures are poor and he can't repair the relationship with sky then it's a non-starter

I don't think Khan can beat Floyd but its getting to the point where he's as good an option as anyone else at 140-147 outside of Pacquiao.

Anyone has a shot at Khan if they can get to his chin, its just getting there. I think he'd give Floyd a good fight potentially he could beat him.

I think we're all getting a little to carried away with Khan. He's improved so much and is a good boxer but Mayweather is pure class. I think Mayweather wins this but the fact that this fight is even being talked about is credit to where Khan has come

khan would have a better chance than Hatton because of his hand speed.

So i would definitely like to see this fight....

Given Khan's C.V. in recent years - which features wins over world class or fringe world class guys like Kotelnik, Malignaggi, Judah, Maidana and McCloskey - the least you can say is that he's a legitimate challenger, and deserves his shot should he get it.

He'd be a huge underdog going into the fight, and rightly so given the quality of the opponent, but i'd be interested to see how he gets on. Hatton, as game and as brave as he was, struggled to lay a glove on Mayweather after the first couple of rounds - could Khan do any better?

Khan has improved massively but mayweather is a different class he is so elusive and even with khans speed which may slow a bit as he goes up in weight I think he would get a boxing master class like many before him still def a fight I'd like to see. Bradley will prove a tough test for him if he beats him I might change my opinion ....
Nah mayweather's the man :TU:
