Why is John Henry Lewis seldom mentioned.

When great light-heavyweights are discussed John Henry Lewis is seldom mentioned. Sure, when he tried to move up he was destroyed by Joe Louis but that's no sin. His record is impressive enough and he had a nice championship run.

It's true when you mention the name what I think of right off is the one-round loss to Louis and the hard luck story of his blindness. But looking at his record, that was his only KO loss. He held the LH title from '35 to '39, went 2-3 against Maxie Rosenbloom and split a pair with James J. Braddock. Final record of 93-8-5 (64) ain't bad.

Just like Michael Spinks, John Henry Lewis is sadly remembered for the one huge fight he lost rather than the impressive career he had. It shouldn't be like that, but it is. Sad.

John Henry was a class champion who rates a place in the top ten greatest Lightheavyweight champs... he was suffering from poor eyesight for some time long before his loss to Louis... when he came to England to fight Len Harvey in defence of his title the fight was almost called off due to John Henrys bad eyesight.....

one sports writer referred to john henry lewis as "having wings on his feet." brilliant boxer, from what i've read, by sports writers and by those who fought him....and what I''ve read is very little. as tomato face asks...why? impossible, for me at least , to find any film of him., except for the quick glimpse of his getting flattened by joe louis. it was common knowledge then that louis fought him only to give him a decent farewell purse, and the quick kayo was to save him from an extended beating.

surely belongs in top ten light heavies. most years he fought over fifteen times and in 1937 he fought twenty times, losing once and reversing the loss, with a kayo two months later.
