Thompson-Nelson revisited

Post by deadpan »

Happened to see that on Sky today. Reminded me what a horrible hometown decision it was. Warren's choice won. Over a true warrior. Who could well have won over 12 rounds.

Interestingly, it also showed Hamed-Ingle. Another stoppage that would NEVER NEVER EVER happen if it had been in reverse.

But British Boxing aint f***ed up, eh?????

I was ringside for that, I was never really happy with the stoppage but that's life, a career doesn't end there.

The perils of forum-surfing when drunk

The Thompson-Nelson fight was a horribly premature stoppage. Always admired Carl, he's been in some of the best fights ever witnessed in the UK, but doesn't get the credit he deserves.

The ONE guy who you dont stop a fight early with is the Cat.

Between this type of stoppage and Dave Paris's fornicating shite scoring makes me depressed at times about UK boxing.
HOWEVER lets not ever forget David Barnes V Jimmy Vincent.
That was an example of SCUM at work, how can you rob a man of giving it his lifes best effort?

BTW deadpan......mate you nailed it 100%

The Nelson v Thompson I agree was a very early stoppage. However, I dont think the result would have been any different despite Thompsons penchant for getting better as fights went on. One thing that was always overlooked about Nelson for me was that actually despite some perceptions he had balls and I believe he would have stopped Thompson late doors.

Anyone who says the Ingle v Naz stoppage was 'premature' has clearly been smoking the same stuff as Joey Barton.

Watch the stoppage again, look at Ingle's legs when he gets up, look at the lack of protest from him when the decision is made. He had for the most part taken a steady beating and the stoppage allowed him to go on to bigger and better things before sadly we all know what happened after that.

Another Naz win for me that fails to get the deserved credit.

Agreed. As good as Ingle was, Naz was a clear league above and was punishing him...... then ending was "merciful" if anything.

what pissed me off was the aftermath.

thompson went on a 2 and a half yr winnng run and didn't even get a rematch.

he'd changed promoters and wasn't given a deserved 2nd chance by a certain promoter.

or given mandatory status by a certain sanctioning body.

allegedly. :OhYes:

it doesn't get the credit cos he tired so dramatically.

a better fighter would have chewed him up and spat him out in that state. :KO:

The way Nelson and Ingle chased and baited Thompson whilst he was champ was disgraceful.

some of nelson's opposition as wbo champ would have been considered poor at commonwealth title level.

why not rematch thompson.

one of the reasons that title belts are so lightly considered.

just take a look at nelson's title reign if u want proof of that. :witzend:

We don't always see eye to eye mate but in this case I 110% agree, Carl was treated disgracefuly before during and after (no rematch)

I was really dissapointed at the way Johnny & Brenden acted, it did seem quite out of character as the fight was gonna happen anyway.

nelson went down in my estimations not giving thompson a return :!: not that id forgiven the lampkin astrocity :!:

i think that fellow proffesionals should be gentleman who are upstanding & allow fellow pro's to try & feed there family's. hatton was wrong not to face witter who went over his old ground impressively & was liver then old names he faced dragged from retirement.

nelson is a real nice guy, but he aint got know heart just great at avoiding a fight with a weak expression of someone meaning buisness.sorry nelson fan's on the character assasination. he did have great ability tho.

Do you all agree that the issue you are talking about isn't one related to one boxer, in this case Johnny Nelson ?
I could sit here, go through a massive list of UK boxers, and in 80% of them make a case for alleging they got an iffy decision then avoided a boxer.
Boxing is a business.
Nelson struggled to sell tickets - so did The Cat.
I know that the purse demands of both boxers for a rematch meant that there wasn't a Promotor alive who could put the fight on and make a profit.
Don't always assume that the lack of a rematch was solely down to Nelson employing avoiding tactics.
As for the fight itself, I honestly believe there was only one outcome had the fight not been stopped, and that was no different to the result in the record books.
Can anyone name me any rematch fights that took place because the winner said "you know what, you deserve another chance" and that genuinely was the reason - not money for instance.
This fight took place on 27-03-99, 12 years ago, so isn't it time to let go ?

In addition, can anyne tell me why it is consistantly Sheffield boxers that come in for this type of criticism ?
The opening thread also has a carp at another Sheffield lad, Naz.
For a boring boxer who not many rated, Johnny isn't half getting the column inches.
If not this, it's his kidnap threat from 9 years ago.
Then there's the thread about a wife staring at his thighs
I would much rather re visit for instance the absolute travesty of Jimmy Vincent v David Barnes where a rematch WAS ordered but never took place.
I wonder why.

I'm a huge Thompson fan, but always felt that Nelson would of bettered him in a rematch. Johnny had a good chin, only one stoppage loss on his record and that was more due to running out of steam (actually a very strange one that).

Nelson as had been said got better as a fight went on, and i just can't see him allowing Thompson to dictate a fight after 5 rounds, Nelson would be able to absorb and outlast the Cat.

Nelson had Thompson psyched before the first bell. Thompson ducked to enter the ring and then pulled back shocked as Nelson towered over him.

Thompson lost his chance of a rematch when Ezra Sellers knocked him out. In Sellers next fight, Nelson knocked him out.

As for hometown decision - a fighter from Manchester against a Sheffield lad in Derby?

Art,
So the failed drugs test, proving Jones was on performance hencing drugs is of no importance then ?
Still think it was robbery, or do you prefer drugs cheats ?
By the way, as the fight was a draw, how is that worse than Thompson losing ?

Worse in that Thompson looked like he was going to lose the fight and although you can argue about the stoppage, no way could you argue that Thompson was winning that fight. The Jones decision was a disgrace. Sure it would have been declared a NC following the drugs test, but it still doesn't make it right that it was scored so badly.

But to finish with the topic at hand, yes I think the stoppage but premature but come on, Nelson was giving him a right hiding and unlike the Rothmann fight, Thompson had showed no signs of the ability to hurt Nelson or get back into the fight.

BTW Spot on about rematch etc. Its clearly not a just a case of "Nelson is a blablabla he didn't give Carl a rematch." Just because two boxers want it to happen doesn't mean it will. Completely different from the Hatton-Witter scenario whereby Hatton actually chose not to fight Witter because of his dislike for him.
