Error Bert Gilroy

Post by jimglen »

I've noticed a couple of inaccuracies re Gilroy's record...

Bert Gilroy was a "middleweight" cum "light-heavyweight"

His fight date for the British "middleweight" title, June 10th. 1940 against the "Great" Jock McAvoy, Belle Vue Manchester should be highlighted and included in his record! Not only did he win the "right" to this contest he was "FAVORITE" to beat McAvoy and it was "schedualed" and posted!

As you may know the fight never took place due to a serious "pelvic" injury(Gilroy), which cost him a year out of his career, but he did return(1941) and returned with not a blemish to his boxing ability and fighting fury, he shot straight up to No.1 again and there he remained untill 1948 and yet the BBBofC never gave him another title shot(?).

Then again, McAvoy never again defended this Title after his schedualed meeting with Gilroy and Mills never defended his British "light-heavyweight" title at all "not once in eight years". Gilroy being the No.1 Contender and "official" Title challenger to BOTH of these Titles!

I think Gilroy deserves his "credit" as not only is it Documented fact, but two of the Greatest names,(among others) in boxing, American boxing Legend Charley Rose stated of Gilroy in 1941 "I have seen the next 'middleweight' Champion of the World and Britains "leading" referee Eugene Henderson stated "But for the second World War, Bert Gilroy could have WELL won a World Title!

These changes in his record details and this information is a good little Profile for Bert as is credited to other figters and fellow opponents as Bert Gilroy is "equally" one of the UK Greats!!!

Trusting, Jim Glen.
