Making Haye - Elliot Worsell

Great read for those of you lucky enough to purchase it, Elliots descriptive style gives us an insight as to the life and brain of haye both inside and outside the ring.

Big congratulations from me to Elliot, a young man who started off as a boxing fan, an anorack, who was lucky enough to penetrate Hayes inner circle ( ) and was allowed an all areas access to hayes professional and personal life.

My favourite quote from the book is when Elliot (1st chapter i think) has a dig at the sheer pig headedness of certain tabloid credential and limelight grabbing 50 word scribes who are so blinkered that they think the whole world owes them a favour. Im sure Elliot has waited many years to put that one particular journalist in his place.

Well done Elliot, and well done team Haye. Its a different type of boxing book, but trust me its honest and its compelling.

Yeah and remember Elliott being on here as a youngster making his way and encouraging him to go for it and fair play he's done well for himself and look forward to reading the book. Well done young Worsell!

Good on him. Spud, Lightsoot and Rhino in particular really made an effort to encourage him in the early days. It was clear from the start he'd do all right. I must admit I've never actually read any of his stuff and probably never will - I don't like sport (auto)biographies - but I'm sure plenty will. The book has been on Amazon's front page most of last week and must've shifted loads as a result.

its well worth a read mate, it gives a different slant on things which is unusual.

Very good book, don't get to say that often in a boxing context. Great job by Elliot, managed to bring his part of the story into it without the irritating 'me, me, me' self-glorification you often get.

It's a magnificent achievement and thoroughly deserved for a nice lad. I haven't spoken to Elliot in a couple of years, I used to ring him regularly when driving between Sheffield and Manchester, but he's always been very knowledgeable.

As a teenager he was boxing mad, but interestingly he did start to become disillusioned with all the politics and turned his attention to the UFC. That in itself is interesting (and worrying) because I wonder how many other teenagers / young 20-somethings have done the same?

This is true. I mean, what could possibly top laser beams and black Jesus? That book has given me ridiculously high expectations for every boxing biography.

Wow. Thanks so much for the kind words. It really does mean the world to me - young, first-timer, finding my feet in the literary world, wondering if I can actually cut it. Gives me a lot of hope and confidence. As anybody that has read it will tell you, it's not exactly a conventional sport/athlete biography and, given my priceless/unique access to DH along the way, it was never my intention to produce something traditional. It had to be different, and it is (I hope). Straying from the norm, especially on a first book (and a commercial one at that), was a little daunting, but I'm just delighted people seem to have taken to the style/different approach. Makes it all worthwhile.

Glyn - can't tell you how pleased I am that you liked it. Really good of you to have been so positive about it these last few weeks.

Ian - glad the book arrived safe and sound. I got a real kick out of signing that one. Couldn't actually believe it when, moments after Haye had rattled through signing 100-odd books in one sitting, the publishers nudged me and said, 'Oh, and we have one for you to sign, as well'. Made my day! Thanks.

I've put my finger on what I like so much about it. Without being ostentatious, it's the first boxing book that reflects the current era in boxing, the internet involvement and a new breed of fighter. I think those who follow these things will appreciate the book as such in years to come.

Also, rather than focus on the sport's glory years and paint a picture of when boxing was in its peak (I wasn't around then), I'm scrapping around for my own piece of gold in the rubble of the noughties, a time when boxing has reduced itself to a weird curiosity, especially in the eyes of the younger generation.
