Was this Jack Johnson's last newspaper interview(?)

Post by Brutu »

It is from a syndicated article that was published in newspapers across the country
in late April 1946 ,less then four weeks before Johnson died.
He was still working at the Hubert's Museum on West 42nd street NYC,
and was asked about the upcoming Louis vs Conn rematch(June.19.1946) and his thoughts about the two fighter's styles.

Jack Johnson was also interviewed by Nat Fleisher for the August 1946 issue RING magazine.
"Johnson,craftiest boxer".
But that interview was done earlier and had appeared on newstands in early June,
just before Johnson picked up his check and was going down to Texas
for some exhibitions with a traveling tent show.
Then he was headed to MSG in his Lincoln Zepher and was killed in NC.

I am very surprised that Jack Johnson would say that Joe Louis stands too square. I had always considered that Johnson and the old time stance was a much squarer stance, allowing the left shot to be used as more of a power shot than a range finder.

This article seems to indicate otherwise, short as it may be. Does anyone here seem to think that Joe Louis stood squarer than Jack Johnson on the available film?

If not, It is not really a mistake you would expect Johnson to make. And in this regard, you would have to question the validity of the interview, wouldnt you.
