THE UK PRESENTATION OF HELENIUS/CHISORA...

Post by loaded_gloves »

Watching Steve Bunce & the others makes me long for intelligent, classy presentation, i.e. Harry Carpenter, Reg Gutteridge with Jim Watt and even Iain Darke.

When did boxing presentation switch from eloquent & dignified to a 'drunken louts yelling in the pub' format? And why?

Duke McKenzie is a shocking commentator. He gave one particular round to Helenius because Chisora was showboating, despite Del Boy dominating for the 3 minutes. Even John Rawling was questioning McKenzie's scoring.

Duke had a shocker. His scoring is suspect and you wonder how someone who fought at the highest level for so many years sees things the way he does.

I know fella I'm only teasing, no harm done.

The funny thing is when they try to be fair and unbiased in that over the top way.

Fair play buddy - it makes them look silly and unprofessional though - kinda like Fox News in the US - but Murdoch doesnt go on the blower whenever politics go against him does he?

What really got on my nerves tonight was Rawling and McKenzie's obsession about their scoring. Every round they would debate it ad nauseum!

Have to agree, Buncey came across as a bumbling idiot stuttering his way through tonight.

The studio were energetic enough.

But Duke & Rawlings were woeful for me.

Rawlings sitting on that fence really annoys me - nearly as much as McKenzie's prejudice for what he likes /doesn't like colouring his judgment.

Showboat = loses round WTF ? :D

the days of paul dempsey sitting behind a desk asking thoughtful questions is long gone unfortunately.

ian darke is sorely missed. i have become acustomed to watching with the sound down and having some music/podcast playing. its pretty enjoyable. i find myself becoming too irritated listening to rawling and duke

Good thread.

I think the whole studio team are like 3 drunk crazy blokes let loose in a tv studio and Duke McKenzie/Rawling team are the worst pairing since Hoddle/Waddle singing Diamond Lights.

Helenius clearly won that last rd yet Dukes gave it to Chisora just so he could say Derek won the fight and i do agree he gave some rds to Helenius i thought Chisora clearly won and vice versa.

i loved the point when Duke said he had it 2-1 to Chisora, and Rawling said 'We've had four rounds mate'. Total silence from Duke!

Well its certainly very different to the HBO PPV production.

I don't think they would have a graphic of "marmite" under Larry Merchant or the interaction of various forums.

I know which one I prefer.

I don't mind Steve B on the radio, as his energy is well served for that medium, but on the box, it is a little OTT (along with those shoes and socks). Not sure why he feels the need to shout his points across. That works for Radio but not really for TV.

I mean, we all watched the same thing so we can see for ourselves. I don't necessarily need it force fed it to me ie the ref, warning Chisora consistently to disrupt his rhythm. A boxing fan can understand what is happening.

Steve L and Steve B both know their stuff but its a bit too loud (Buncey, that is) & condescending, 'I know you know mate...', 'I remember when you where there...', 'I remember you telling me at the time....' etc. I think we get the point that they both know boxing, but it comes across that they are the only ones who do & not necessarily the people watching. Which does irritate.

Duke can be very insightful, at times and equally a little baffling. Rawlings is ok, he is at least keen.

I actually thought it was one of Duke's better nights. But still not a patch on ANY one of the 2nd commentators that Sky uses. Duke is okay in the studio - but just doesn't have a good chemistry with Rawling.

I just wasn't keen on watching what felt like an episode of eastenders in the studio.
