Amir Khan : He will learn from this and come again !!
All this fight proved was that Khan should stick to fighting on the outside, coming inside with those fast combinations and back out again, it's very simple but it works. When Khan was doing this Peterson didn't have a clue how to handle him and couldn't handle the speed. This in-out style has become Khan's style since Roach took control and it's very effective and i thought he would use it through out the fight. The problem with Khan is that he let's himself get involved in slug fests through out a fight and when he does this he always comes off worse and it's pure stupidity on his part because he is not an inside brawler. If Khan had stuck to his normal elusive style then he would have picked off Peterson at will and won the fight by a wide margin or even a late stoppage. Credit has to be given to Peterson for his heart and courage, aswell as his determination and he did take the fight to Khan, but that is where Khan should have capitalised and picked off Peterson, not engaged in mini wars every few rounds. Even Freddie Roach said before the fight that Khan had to keep off the ropes !! Please listen to your trainer Amir. I would say the main reasons for Khan losing this fight were attitude, he was looking too far ahead and underestimated Peterson, his tactics in regard of getting involved in brawls and the two point deduction given by the referee, which turned the result from a Khan UD into a Peterson SD. I don't think this fight neccesarily de-rails Khan, i think if he gets a re-match with Peterson he will beat him quite easily if he sticks to what he is good at, which is a refined version of "hit and run". I will stick to my assesment that Khan should beat every fighter outside of Pacqauio and Mayweather with that style, but if he deviates and gets into needless slug fests, then he is not fighting to his advantages and will run the risk of getting out muscled or knocked out. He and Roach have developed a style that is succesfull, he just has to stick to it and not turn into Thomas Hearns mid fight. Khan is still a very very good fighter and is undoubtedly a world class fighter, he will learn from this and come again for sure.
Re: AMIR KHAN : HE WILL LEARN FROM THIS AND COME AGAIN !!
I agree with all of that.
Khan did not stick to his gameplan and underestimated him.
Needs the rematch bigtime now.

2 points mainly from what ive seen of the fight and heard about it
1. This is the second time Khan hasnt followed a plan, he didnt do it against Maidana and it nearly cost him and he didnt last night and got beat. That should tell him alot.
2. I believe Khan thinks he can get into slugfests due to the way his chin (kind of) stood up against Maidana, if he had gone down against Maidana there is no chance he would have employed the tactics he did last night.

Re: AMIR KHAN : HE WILL LEARN FROM THIS AND COME AGAIN !!
Khan is essentially a one dimensional fighter, but it's effective and it lends itself to his main attributes of speed and accuracy. If he tries anything outside of this formula he begins to look average. Most fighters will come forward and get picked off, those that stay on the outside can't deal well with Khan's speed and find themselves coming forward trying to close the gap. That is why Pacquaio would beat Khan because of his ring generalship in closing down his opponent, fast hands and unorthadox angle of punches and power. The same could be said of Mayweather, but he would counter Khan is he came forward and also cut the ring down and attack viciousy as he did against Ricky Hatton from the 7th round onwards. Another guy who could do this well would be Maarquez, but i think Khan would have too much speed for him, but most other fighters don't have that ring generalship, the power or the array of punches to put Khan in trouble and move predictably forward to get picked off at will.smoggy7188 wrote:2 points mainly from what ive seen of the fight and heard about it

Re: AMIR KHAN : HE WILL LEARN FROM THIS AND COME AGAIN !!
Agree with what's been posted in this thread. It's as if he wants to prove his 'machoness' by taking shots needlessly. Against Kotelnik he adopted this approach for the whole 12 rounds and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, I believe it's Khan's arrogance that led to his downfall last night, looking ahead to Mayweather and thinking he can brawl on the inside to win.
Khan is without doubt a world class boxer with world class skills and will come again. If he gets a rematch I think he'll win with his hit and run tactics. Hopefully though he'll become a bit more humble but I can't see it.

Re: AMIR KHAN : HE WILL LEARN FROM THIS AND COME AGAIN !!
Khan is simply an amateurish, one dimensional fighter. He throws a flurry of shots then legs it half way across the ring. Against Maidana and Peterson there were times when he was literally running backwards from his opponent. He constantly tries throw big knockout punches when he is clearly not a puncher. When a man stands up to him (Limond, Prescott, Maidana, Peterson) he is in trouble.
You can't fix Amir Khan, the product is inherently flawed.

Re: AMIR KHAN : HE WILL LEARN FROM THIS AND COME AGAIN !!
He isn't an all round fighter, but that doesn't make him flawed, it just means he has to stick to what he does best as is the case with a lot of fighters. You don't get to be a world title holder being an amateurish fighter and that belittles khan's acheivments so far to date. The simple fact is that Khan does very well with one style of fighting, it's one dimensional, but it works because ultimatly it involves speed and volume of punches and agains most opposition it will be effective. Khan only looks susceptible and average when he deviated away from what he is good at, ie, hit and run, movement, effective combinations.loaded_gloves wrote:Khan is simply an amateurish, one dimensional fighter. Khan won his two belts from Kotelnik ("the worst world champion in boxing") and a shopworn Judah. Neither man is anything much so it more underlines how cheap and easy world title belts come in modern boxing.
He really is a one dimensional amateurish fighter once someone drags him into the deep end.

Re: AMIR KHAN : HE WILL LEARN FROM THIS AND COME AGAIN !!
I don't know why the need to write pages of assessment when the fact is simple: The guy is just not all that.
That's a devastating loss to Prescott and now a to-the-wire loss against a fringe contender.
If Khan was the truth, he'd have ran straight through Peterson like a juggernaut.
This "blurring handspeed" is overated. He is wreckless and innacurate with the shots. His grinning and putting his hands in the air isn't kidology, it's immaturity.
Fact is, with his huge entourage of back-slappers, the massively overated Roach and Ariza, the Seckbachs, the rappers and all the other shit -it masquerades a very flaky operator.
Even the boxing press and pundits were waxing lyrical about 'stopping Peterson' and that's just lazyness. I've watched a ton of Peterson fights and knew he wouldn't get stopped. Hurt yes, go down - probably. But the kid would keep coming.
Talk should now focus on him. Because he never had the superstar team, the GBP cheerleaders or the physical gifts that Khan (supposedly) had... he just rolled his sleeves up and put the work in.
And this criticsm of the referee is uncalled for. Khan didn't have one cut, lump or bruise from Peterson's head. Yet Peterson's eye was badly swollen cos Khan through an elbow in it. Khan's use of the elbow, complaining and whinging was the action's of a prima donna. Cortez saved Khan's ass against Maidana and he expected it yet again but because he never got it,he now attacks the ref.
He forgot Peterson was here to win and wasn't making the numbers up for the Amir Khan show.
He thought he'd turn up and clown Peterson with his "skillz" and then call out Mayweather or Bradley. How wrong he was.

Gomez,
Most of what you say about the backslappers, the khan show, the immaturity of the arm waving etc is true, and i hope this defeat humbles him and his extremely arrogant team. However, to say Roach and Ariza are overrated is an insult and khan's speed and accuracy is some of the best in the business. His approach and attitude are to blame, not his skills or trainer.

Re: AMIR KHAN : HE WILL LEARN FROM THIS AND COME AGAIN !!
Unlike Gomez I don't believe that Roach is over-rated, Ariza not so sure. However, I think Amir's probems are nothing to do with Roach or Ariza, but his mental or lack of mental ability.
Like everyone else I think Khan only thought he had to turn up to win then the Mayweather fight would have been a formality. This put him in the wrong frame of mind. His single biggest floor though imo is his ring IQ. It's just too low. He just can't stick to a gameplan and struggles to adjust. He has all the physical attributes, but elite boxers can adjust. Look at Mayweather, Hopkins, Calzaghe, Marquez et al. When the going gets tough, they adjust. Amir starts fast and if his opponent has not been blown away, he seems to struggle in the later rounds once they've worked him out. It happened to an extent against Kotelnik, Maidana and now Peterson. The Irish contingent aregue it would have happened against McCloskey too.
There's no doubt Amir has elite skills, but lacks the IQ to use them properly. I think he'll beat Peterson in the rematch, but against the elite I think he'll lose as many as win.

Re: AMIR KHAN : HE WILL LEARN FROM THIS AND COME AGAIN !!
I don't think Amir has really changed that much since the amateur days. His inability to fight in close is an embarrassment and he is pretty much a sitting duck when cornered. Having said that I think he stands a good chance of reversing the result if he fights Peterson again. Petersen looked like chopped liver at the end and I suspect such an effort would have taken quite a lot out of him.

I'm no big Amir Khan fan but I am really disappointed with this result because I was hoping Amir would go on to fight and beat Tim 'Im the most boring fighter ever, but Im American so its ok' Bradley and shut up a lot of Americans. Now that fight looks very unlikely any time soon.

Khan-Peterson fight night weights?
Anyone know what they were?
I heard at a check weigh in on the morning of the fight, Khan was 148lbs? If so, he was probably over 150lbs come fight time.

Khan will learn nothing from this. You can already hear him bitching, whining and deluding himself in the post fight interview and the press conference. "We all know who won that fight", yeah - Lamont Peterson won it.
Peterson will beat him again because Amir's ego is bigger than Bolton. He no longer lives on Planet Earth.

Khan boxed the wrong fight, he chose to brawl rather than box and once again he looks poor in doing so.
If Khan gets a rematch I have no doubts in my mind that Khan will outbox Peterson and probably shut him out and look
good in the process but it wouldnt suprise me if he ran up to Welterweight now.
One thing is for sure, Bradley has more bargaining power now Khan has gone and lost, regardless of
a rematch and whatever.

Re: AMIR KHAN : HE WILL LEARN FROM THIS AND COME AGAIN !!
Never been a fan of Khan but there's no denying his ability as a boxer. He was guilty of looking past Peterson and came unstuck. I have no doubt that if he is to have a rematch he'll straighten out his tactics and win comfortably.
However he might be better to just move up to welterweight, as he was planning on doing anyway, and draw a line under this fight and accept that it was a bad day at the office. Put him in against a top ten welterweight in March/April, win convincingly and he's back in line for the big fights.
It's certainly not the end of the world for him and he'll certainly learn one or two things from this latest defeat.
The disappointing thing for me was his extremely bitter interview with Larry Merchant. Peterson was so full of respect for Khan in his interview and acknowleged that Khan had given him his shot therefore he would be happy to return the favour. Khan saying he was fighting two people in the ring was disrespectful.
Top fight though!

Re: AMIR KHAN : HE WILL LEARN FROM THIS AND COME AGAIN !!
All i'm saying is that i feel Khan would have won by a wide margin if he had continued to do what he did in the 1st and several other rounds. No i don't think that Peterson was good enough to not allow Khan to work on the outside, it was Khan who at times wanted to brawl. I have said in another post that someone like Pacquaio, Marquez and Mayweather are clever at cutting off the ring and being intelligent in attack, but i just think that Peterson went looking for Khan and Khan wanted to mix it and thought he could mix it, not that it was particularly tactical nounce from Peterson. It's not pro Khan, it's just me saying it as i see it. I know he is a one dimensional fighter and he can't fight on the inside etc, but he has developed a style that will be enough to beat most opponents and when he sticks to it he looks world class and when he doesn't he looks naive and average. When Khan was sticking to the game plan Peterson didn't have a clue how to handle him. I do give credit to Peterson, but yes, i am saying that this result is more down to Khan's approach and attitude than it was to Peterson being the better fighter. I am not a mssive Khan fan, far from it, many times i have been critical of him and i have recently disputed his claim to be the best at the 140lbs division, because i would like to see a Maidana re-match and then fights with Alexander and Bradley.tonyevs wrote:I have not been able to see the fight from lastnight.
