Without a second thought, what we know today is a
result of the boxing reporter, journalist and writer.
My first real contact with a boxing writer was old
Lee Kerr who used to have a regular column in
Boxing Illustrated many yers ago.
One of the first boxing books that I purchased was
one by Bill Stern. The book was called
BILL STERN'S FAVORITE BOXING STORIES"
published by Blue Ribbon Books, copyright 1948 by Mac Davis.
One of Bill's quotes was as follows:
: - BILL STERNBut say what you say - prize fighting has enriched
sports literature with many of the strangest stories ever told
= true stories far stranger than fiction.
In his 212 page book, Bill had a variety of 29 interesting stories
from bare-knuckles boxing to "Cauliflower Portraits and Profiles:.
Some of those mentioned in the last story were Joe louis,
Felix Martinez, Tex Ricard, Mickey Walker, Tommy Loughran,
Eddie Eagan and others.
Over the years there have been many fine boxing writers for
newspapers and magazines, and we are richer for it today.
Som names from the past: Lew Eskin, Jack Welsh,
Don Majeski, Randy Gordon, Red Smith, Jack Obermayer and  many more.
