Robin Reid pacing the hall

Post by bennie »

Robin Reid was told today by promoter Jess Harding he will have to wait till this weekend to learn whether his controversial points defeat to Germany's Sven Ottke for IBF and WBA titles has secured him a rematch.
Harding returned from Venezuela over the weekend, to tell Reid: "We've had a good hearing that gives me hope, but the WBA told me that they will not be making their decision until the weekend."
Added Harding: "The WBA committee viewed extensive video evidence of the fight, and the refereeing, that I produced for them, and I only have good vibes about the hearing. But it will be a day or two before we know whether we are going to be given a rematch. So we have to just sit tight and hope for the best."
Reid admitted today: "I'm shattered by the tension of waiting for the phone call to say categorically either that we have won the appeal or lost it. We've had good luck messages from all over the world.
"All I want is justice and an immediate rematch.
"The video evidence shows quite clearly I should have gained the verdict, and I will be heartbroken if I don't get into the ring again with Ottke and be judged on a level playing field. But all I can do now is wait and hope."

Unfortunately if Reid ever gets back in the ring with Ottke it will never be a level playing field unless the fight is away from Germany which isn't going to happen.

I would be astonished if Reid gets a rematch. I've already heard Mads Larsen is next up again for the German.

Fingers crossed for Reidy, he's never been my favourite fighter, but I really really felt for him during that fight, i really hope he gets the appeal.

What's the betting that Ottke vacates the WBA belt rather than

The difference in a rematch, is that the WBA would be appointing the officials, and they are not as crooked in my opinion as the IBF. It is down to the IBF and Sauerland that those bastards stiched Reid, Montello for the IBF appointed Tillerman as ref, and appointed the judges too.

Well, the WBA can order a rematch, but my guess would be that Ottke just vacates the belt rather than face him.

I guess that would then make Robin number 1 contender for Mundine's belt would it not?

One reason alone why Reid will get no satisfaction here - Precedent.

If they let Reid get a rematch - what about all the rest of Snottke's Muggee's?

Brewer, Larsen, Mitchell etc etc.

I was reading the other day just how many dodgy decisions lie in Snottke's wake - more than 10 I think - when you consider that he has had so few fights that's like more than a third of his fights have been dodgy/contraversial/fixed.

It is a such a shame that the UK (thanks to results like the Brodie one) is fast getting such a reputation.

No way can you compare Brodie v Chi with Ottke v Reid.

For one thing the ref wasn't bent, and at least Chi got a draw, and therefore a rematch opportunity, Reid wasn't even allowed to fight.

Such decisions are no retrospective either, if they give him a rematch, it is not like the others could all ask for a rematch, you have to go through the appeal process, which most of the others I am assuming didn't.

You've also got to remember that Ottke only recently won the WBA belt, and that the majority of his defences were of the IBF belt, so therefore the WBA are not implicated.

I don't hold the WBA responsible for what transpired, the officials were nothing to do with them, the IBF ran the entire show.

could Harding persuade Ottke to leave Germany? Doubtful I know but unless we see an unbiased set of judges and ref next time I can see the same thing happening.

So why are they appealing to the WBA for a rematch?

Harding decided to lobby the WBA, as they have a better track record of ordering rematches than the IBF. The IBF were also demanding a lot of money for an appeal.

This, of course, is hypothetical.

If the WBA decide that the refereeing against Sven Ottke was flawed and give Robin Reid a rematch where would it be held??

Before, this was a voluntary defence for the German so he called all the shots but if the WBA order a rematch would this be classed as a Mandatory???

If so Could Reid make things hard for Ottke by not agreeing to go to Germany ??

If the two can’t agree on a Mandatory would it come down to a purse bid that, if won by a Uk company, could force Ottke over here???? If he does'nt Vacate that is........Which he would.

No chance Ottke will leave Germany for the likes of Reid, i expect Reid and Larsen in a box off to see who gets a rematch. Or maybe the winner to face Mundine if Ottke retires as he might.

I dont think its part of Larsens future plans. He will fight Brewer in a IBF eliminator in march, should he win it he will defend his EBU belt vs Mario Viet before getting a world title shot.

I think if Sven Ottke retires undefeated it will be the biggest scam ever. If he doesnt fight Reid again he will be proved a chicken sh1t and if he doesnt challenge Calzaghe it will be a joke. He obviously knows this Larsen guy will lose it makes my blood boil that this guy may be able to retire without registering a loss.

It could all work out nicely for Reidy actually.

The likliest outcome the way I see it is that Ottke will vacate, I don't see how he is going to want to defend against Reid under the kind of scrutiny the fight was placed under.

As Bennie rightly points out. The IBF were the ones who appointed officials on the night, but as the WBA belt was on the line too, they have the right to demand a rematch if they see fit for their belt.

One thing though which is worth thinking about, is that if it did come to a purse bid, who the fornicate will be able to outbid Sauerland. Sauerland knows he will get a packed hall and 8 million viewers, who in the UK could say that? Nobody. Aside from some American promoter who felt like being a benefactor to Reid, it would be almost guranteed that Sauerland would outbid anyone out there.
