Anybody see the recent ABA that took place in Aberdare, I watch the fights on telly. The contest featuring Gareth Couch (England's #2 Lightweight - changed nationalities) and the defending Welsh champion (?) was the most intriguing on. I believe Couch took him very lightly and seemed exhausted after 1 round.

On the whole I thought the standard was quite poor, Darren Edwards finally lost his run of WABA victories do a much improved opponent (who's name again escapes me). The rest didn't show the best of fitness, perhaps this is due to thw WABA's being on earlier this year. But I was quite dissapointed and don't expect much Welsh success in the European's unfortunately.

It was a half-decent show, a few good up and coming fighters but nobody that stood out as a bit special. The Highlight was Couch getting beat, Bored of being No.2 in England he went of to Taffy Land for a belt, and duely got one......actualy several......to the head :)

He must be gutted :) :)

Jamie Arthur, predicted that Couch would come a cropper. Whether that was just being bias towards his mate I don't know. But he got it spot on.

Kevin Evans won as usual, but I was suprised to see Robbie James fail... The future does look bright for Welsh boxing and I am sure they will do well in Croatia and maybe even Athens...

It's a bit flattering to Couch to name him England's no.2 lightweight boxer, he was possibly the no.2 at featherweight when he lost to a certain Kevin Mitchell of West Ham in last season's ABA 57kg's final, but David Mulholland would've had something to say about that.
He's porbably around the 5th or 6th ranked lightweight in the country, ofcourse the no.1 being Bury's Amir Khan.

Darren Edwards was beaten by Dai Davies, of whom I did some sparring with a while back.

Thats the name, very improved fighter - must be the sparring, what did you think of him. He habours proffesional ambitions, cause he said he would have turned pro if he'd lost.

I'm glad he won, Edwards has been a great servant to Welsh Amateur boxing, but I don't think he has either the style or power to make an impact in the paid ranks.

Yes, he was pretty sharp for 3 rounds in sparring. From the fourth onwards it was a different story, but the pro game is all about adapting.
