No Alba, English Eliminator, the winner to fight the winner of the English title fight between Erick Ochieng and Nick Quigley on 28th January, matchroom show, Al Harbi and Ball 16th March at New Bingley Hall, Birmingham, Dave Coldwell show featuring Curtis Woodhouse V Guiseppi Lauri former world title challenger.

Was gonna start a thread on this also mate.

This is a top top fight this and you dont see these enough in boxing these days.

Some of you lot not from the Midlands may not know much about Ball and Al Harbi as neither has had much TV time etc and mostly plyed their early trade on small hall shows.

Both are hotley tipped prospects, Nasser is highly rated by the likes of Richie Woodhall (used to train him) and Ball has been up for boxing writers awards on more than 1 occasion (think he lost out to Frankie Gavin 1 year).

Real good prospect vs prospect scrap this, another top bill from Coldwell - TV needs to get involved with them

does Ball hit any harder nowadays? always struck me a lack of power would hinder him at the higher levels

Haven't seen him box for a while mate, but I agree from watching him a lot early on used to seem a lack of power, similar to his stable mate Richie Ghent I used to like watching, real neat boxer but lacked snap. From what I've read and heard (and he has gotten a few stoppages in more recent fights) think Ball's power is improving, planting his feet more.

Yes, Rare nowadays to see this, two fighters at this stage of their careers fighting each other with no major title at stake, just an eliminator. Ochieng and Quigley are fighting straight for the English title and have both been beat, this is because when Mark Lloyd pulled out of his English title fight with Max Maxwell, neither Al Harbi or Ball could take his place against Maxwell as they were both awaiting purse bids for their eliminator, so the Ochieng/Quigley match had to be quickly arranged with the winner fighting the winner of the Eliminator. In my opinion it should have been the other way round, but thats boxing for you.

Too true mate, better records and more experience, Ochieng and Quigley were not in the picture before the English Title and eliminator was first decided by the BBB of c.

Would have been good if it was for the English Title, but good for boxing unbeaten fighters fighting each other, credit to both for stepping up to the plate, should draw a big crowd, Birmingham V the Black Country is always good, I just hope when it's over the winner gets a shot at the winner of the English Title fight between Ochieng and Quigley and is not avoided.

Maybe they have better records/experience than Quigley (and it's a big "maybe"), but not Ochieng. Neither has a win to compare with his over Cameron. Ochieng has been matched more competitively than them too.

Good fight though :TU:

I think Cameron was bit overated because he was good Amatuer maybe, both Dee Mitchell and Journeyman Ryan Clark thought they beat Cameron in their fights with him, but what worried me about Ochieng was when he was bullied and out worked by a very basic Luke Robinson 5-1-1 on his home show in london, saying that Ochieng does have nice skills and is still only 24, but when put under pressure ? Nick Quigley 23 looked bad and good in Prizefighter, srapppy in his first fight which was a split, very good in his second fight, but I was most impessed with the heart he showed in the final after coming into it being worse for ware. me personally I think taking into account they have both lost and had a lot less fights then Al Harbi and Ball they should not be fighting for an English Title just yet, even if they are ones for the future, who would you rather win an English title against a fighter unbeaten in 13 fights or a fighter who has lost in 11 or 9 fights ? which would look better on your record ?

It's quality of opposition and match I was thinking of. Most boxing fans don't judge a fighter by how many wins/fight he has. Tyrone Nurse is 20-0 and not yet in the domestic top ten, due to the quality of opposition fought. Nothing wrong with that, he's learning the trade, but no-one saying he warrants a shot ahead of Steve Williams (12-1).

I don't believe any one should fight for major Domestic Title in under 10 fights full stop, because with such limited fights they would not be prepared for the next step even if they won it. Tyrone Nurse as developed experience with all the fights he has had and where do you get your top ten from ? BBB of C ? Boxrec ? or many other sites ? Al Harbi is in the Welter rankings and Ball is in the Middleweight rankings on boxrec, in fact there are lots of fights in the wrong weight rankings, so sometimes it is almost imposible to judge by rankings, there is no legit ranking system in this country, not like other countries, instead fighters warrant consideration via names being put to the BBB of C through Promoters, Managers ect.. Eliminators are formed, but do not always lead to title shots and in some cases like this fighters are put straight into title fights based on the right promoters willling to put it on their show. I understand where you are coming from, but it is not that easy to fight other prospects or more experienced fighters nowadays.

Yes I watched that ABA final, if I remember well he put Agogo on the floor, in that bout, your right he is very strong and carries a good whack. What I was trying relay was that if Ochieng warrants fighting for an English Title then he should not have been bullied and overworked by a Pro novice on his own show and also out jabbed by a boxer not renowned for great boxing skills, I mean Robinson easily took the centre of the ring.

I sneaked a look at the last set of BN ratings, where Nurse was at 15, which sounds about right to me. Just out of interest, Al Harbi and Ball are at 18 and 35 respectively.

I'd hold back on suggesting that you need 10 fights or more just to challenge for domestic titles. "World" champs have been crowned with less. Levan Ghvamichava is just 6-0, but I'd tip him to beat most domestic light-welters right now.

there r other routes for fighters to gain experience over the longer distance i think Ochieng and Quigley should b fighting for a masters title with the winner fighting ball or al harbi defending english title . i just dont understand how a eliminator can b put together and then 2 lads with less experience and worse records get the english title fight.

As my above posts have tried to suggest, Ochieng has a much better record than the others. Forget the one loss - it doesn't and shouldn't mean that he gets left behind fighters with an "0" who have fought inferior opposition. Quigley I accept hasn't done much more than the two other fighters.
