Favourite Nicknames...
Nothing (necessarily) to do with the boxer, just which names you think sound great.
I love...
"The Toy Bulldog"
"The Atomic Bull" (Wasted on a very average guy)
"Smokin' Joe"
"The Boxing Bible/El Radar" (Both of them)
"Commander 'Vander"
"The Dark Destroyer" (Such a beautifully sinister name, pity it doesnt belong to a legend)
"Bazooka"
"The Night Train" (So tired of hearing Liston mistakenly called, "The Bear")
"The Manassa Mauler"
"Homicide Hank"
"The Barbados Demon"

Benn is not an ATG, but he's a legend the many.
Re: Favourite Nicknames...
Of the ones not mentioned ''Iron'' Mike and ''The Hitman'' Hatton have a nice ring

Not intending to denigrate him, to clarify. I just think, "The Dark Destroyer," should belong to one of the best the sports ever seen...which Benn certainly was not (no shame there).JDC wrote:Benn is not an ATG, but he's a legend the many.
Re: Favourite Nicknames...
I can agree with this. He's one of a few boxers whose nickname actually helped their career and status. Ali was someone who benefited in a similar way (with ''greatest'' tag.)Goodnight, Irene wrote:Not intending to denigrate him, to clarify. St Paul Phantom, Hoosier Bearcat. For comedy value, "the coal miners daughter".

"Philly Phantom," is another good one.
For comedy, I always adored, "Hold My Beer" Hicks and, "Instant" Coffee

I love watching their enthusiasm in crowds. But that nickname should be retired. That's like saying I love the song 'Helter Skelter' by U2.Goodnight, Irene wrote:The Brits stand by their men in Boxing as fiercely as any Mex, Rican or Yank Ive ever met.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:You're joking, right?JDC wrote:''The Hitman'' Hatton

Sometimes, the cover is better than the original. Sometimes. Not so, in the case of the two Hitmen

No, no we fvcking don't. Not all of us, anyway. JDC has obviously suffered some sort of concussion, because this Brit always mentally edited out that Hatton dared call himself that.
It was just... fvcking wrong. I hate it when the PR boys inflict a nickname based not on credentials or likeness but rather on alliteration; but to besmirch my favourite fighter of all time by giving his moniker to a short fat white dude was sickening. For me, at least.
Back on topic: Finito always sounded cool. Bonecrusher's hard to beat, particularly when they put it in lieu of your first name. Razor, too. Buster's all right.
But I think my current favourite has to be the Thai, Veeraphol (Nakornluang-Promotion/Sahaprom/3K Battery Corp/Toyota-Thailand): Deathmask. Their habit of changing their name to suit their sponsors is pretty whacky, but being called Deathmask is the shiznit.
Re: Favourite Nicknames...
Feck off. For the record I can't stand Hatton. I just said the name had a nice ring.

I don't even know what this meansthis Brit always mentally edited out that Hatton dared call himself that.

Um, it means that whenever he fought, a sort of fuzzy bar appeared across the waistband of Hatton's trunks, blocking from my view the offending sobriquet; & also whenever Ian Darke opened his mouth to say it I always heard "Ricky NOT THE BLOODY HITMAN 'COS THAT WAS THOMAS HEARNS'S NICKNAME, RIGHT? RIGHT? RIGHT? Hatton" instead.
This sometimes broke up the flow of the commentary, but it was worth it to save me throwing things at the TV & then breaking out my Tommy Hearns DVDs to watch back-to-back until the pain went away.
In case you were wondering, my issue was not with you, but with the pasty one for daring to nick the nom de guerre.

You can also throw into the mix.
Tony "TNT" Tucker
Riddick "Big Daddy" Bowe.
Jose "Mantaquilla" Napoles
DaVarryl "Touch of Sleep" Williamson.
And I do find it agree that Ricky Hatton had the cajonex to use the nick the name of the Hitman.

Re: Favourite Nicknames...
No problem. ''this brit'' appeared to be referring to me. Thanks for clarifying

Re: Favourite Nicknames...
Just for the vintage, I like names using words which are now extinct, like, "The Livermore Larruper," (Max Baer).
