Upper body strength

Post by Adamj1987 »

Any tips to improve upper body strength in 4 months other than just doing weights, press ups etc?

Are you asking if you can get strong without having to work for it?

Body weight exercises are mainly the best for you too. And cheaper than equipment.

Dips! And not he feet up, hands on bench type - v. bad for shoulder impingement etc.

For something specific see also The Grappler (or Torsonator) - loads of training clips out there and an increasing number of boxers and mma fighters seen using them in the countdown type shows. I have one and it's replaced bench press and seated shoulder press (benches etc actually sold now as a result). A very versatile tool that can build strength and conditioning in the torso and that 'triple extension 'chain' effect for explosiveness...

e.g as per around 46 seconds in on this:

Lateral pullups. Hang from a pullup bar horizontally with someone holding your legs. Then do horizontal pullups. Its like rows.

Clap pushups. Do a clap before coming down. So you have to push explosively.

Handstand pushups. Just have someone hold your feet for balance, or do it against a wall.

Pullup-pushup. You pretend the pullup bar is the top of a wall. Pull yourself up explosively and immediately push yourself up further like you're getting ready to climb over. May need assistance at first.

Medicine ball drills. All kinds of stuff you can do with medicine balls. Lying down throwing ball in the air. Standing up throwing ball overhead. Throw the ball like you're punching. Forward overhead throws like soccer players from the sidelines. Reverse overhead throws tossing the ball behind you.

everything mentioned is great, but in my opinion, as far as pure max strength is concerned, weights are better than bodyweight exercises anyday. If there is no access to weights, another thought would be sandbags, and odd object lifting like big tires, kegs, etc.
