Mexicos greatest ----

Many, many great boxers have come out of the nation of Mexico. Probably the very top ones would be Salvador Sanchez, Julio Cesar Chavez, Vicente Saldivar, Ruben Olivares, Rafael Herrera, Chucho Castillo, Carlos Zarate & Alfonso Zamora.


Out of this list, I'd say that Julio Cesar Chavez, Salvador Sanchez, Carlos Zarate & Vincente Saldivar scaled the highest heights among the Mexican professional boxers.

To me, Ruben Olivares would rank at bantamweight in the top 5 or 6 in that weight class. His mark at bantamweight was extraordinary. A true ATG in that weight class. A true top 50 ATG fighter in my view.

His ATG was confirmed when he destroyed in only 2 rounds one of my favorite fighters, Bobby Chacon. But at 126lbs, I do not think Ruben is an all time top 20. He might be into the 21st to 30th slots. Maybe after the 30th slot at 126lbs he is perfectly fitted to tell you the truth.

The great Vicente Saldivar is a top 10 or 15 at featherweight. What a fighter. I have him ranked in the top 100 great fighters pound per pound also. But at 130lbs, I do not think he ever fought there. Did he?

You're all forgetting a great senor named Pipino.

Only 19 when he won the title by demolishing tough Angel Espada, Pipino made 11 title defenses in less than 4 years, KOing every opponent except for Randy Shields.

During his reign, Pipinomania ruled in L.A.,where Cuevas drew turnaway crowds, destroying quality fighters Clyde Gray, Billy Backus, Espada (again) and Harold Weston.
In those 4 years as king of the welterweights, the bonecrushing Pipino certainly looked like one of the all-time Mexican greats.

Cuevas is a favorite of mine, but he doesn't touch the top 10. For me, it's between Olivares, Morales, Barrera, Arizmendi, Chavez & Marquez. Any one of them is a legit call.

A nice surface win on Olivares' ledger, but wasn't Chacon severely dehydrated for that fight?
He spent the previous night and the morning of the bout in the sauna trying to lose all the excess weight he accumulated from avoiding most of training camp.
A young Chacon wasn't exactly known for his dedication.

They might have well carried Chacon into the ring for that rematch with Olivares. He was a corpse going in and El Puas merely buried the carcass.
Kotey convincingly beat Olivares in his next fight.

Bottom of the top 10, I forgot Sqanchez initially, he's in my first tier as well.

Barrera deserves a mention in this debate. I'd have him in my top 10.

For a Top 10, (Unless were are overlooking someone obvious), there seems to be 9 guys who are certain:
Sanchez, Chavez, Olivares, Saldivar, Canto, Arizmendi, Barrera, Morales, and Marquez. It would be really hard to rank them in order.

Who should be #10 is hard to say. Guess you could go with Lopez, Gonzales, or Cuevas. Seems like there must be someone else though...

I'd think Zarate or Herrera would rank over that group. I rate Humberto gonzalez over Lopez. A guy whom I'd have to look over his record closer is ortega. I know he beat paret and gavilan among others.

Yeah, Zarate should be in there. So the Top 10 would consist of:
Sanchez, Chavez, Olivares, Saldivar, Canto, Arizmendi, Barrera, Morales,Marquez, and Zarate. Unless we are all overlooking someone obvious, that is a pretty solid list. They seem to be above everyone else.
I don't think Ortega makes it. Gavilan was on the slide when he beat him. He and some of the other guys mentioned could make up the next 10.
