FORMER heavyweight champion Joe Frazier has been arrested in the US and accused of assaulting a woman.
Frazier was taken into custody in Philadelphia and was to be charged with simple assault and reckless endangerment, police spokeswoman Maria Ibrahim said today.
He was in jail awaiting arraignment, she added.
The alleged victim was described by police as the mother of Frazier's son. Authorities gave no further information.
Frazier was the heavyweight boxing champion in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
He fought Muhammad Ali in three classic heavyweight bouts, winning once and losing twice.
A woman answering the phone at Frazier's gym declined comment today.
Calls to his daughter, attorney Jacqui Frazier-Lyde, were not immediately returned.
