FURY AND ROGAN TO FIGHT FOR IRISH HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
TYSON Fury and Martin Rogan will fight for the vacant Irish heavyweight title at the Odyssey Arena on April 14.
The Boxing Union of Ireland have confirmed that Fury has the right to box for the title after proving his Irish ancestry with some help from his cousin and World middleweight title contender Andy Lee.
Undefeated former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Fury says he is “thrilled” to be boxing for the Irish title and thanked Lee and his family after they backed his campaign to prove his Irish roots.
“Andy’s father went to the Boxing Union of Ireland and signed an affidavit that my grandmother was Irish so all the talk about me being Irish or not has been put to bed,” explained Fury.
“Fighting Martin Rogan at the Odyssey Arena was always a fight that I wanted and now for it to be confirmed for the Irish title is fantastic.”
Fury says that he is going to be in the shape of his life for the fight, even better than when he won the British and Commonwealth titles from Dereck Chisora last summer.
“I’m not going to make excuses, I had some problems that I was going through in my last two fights but this time I will be in unbelievable shape and I think everyone will be shocked by just how good I look,” added Fury.
Mick Hennessy said: “Tyson has already won the English, British and Commonwealth titles, he now wants to add the Irish and European belts to his collection on route to winning a genuine world title. In doing this he will become the first ever boxer to do so .”
Joining Tyson Fury, Martin Rogan will be middleweight sensation Chris Eubank Jr from Brighton, Former Commonwealth Champion Irishman John O'Donnell from Shepherd's Bush, Belfast fighters Jamie Conlan, Dee Walsh, Darren Corbett, Tommy Tolan, Ciaran Healy, Marc Mccullough, Conall Carmichael, Moses Matovu and County Mayo’s Michael Sweeney.

Re: FURY AND ROGAN TO FIGHT FOR IRISH HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Does this mean it will be 10 rounds are Ireland one of the countries whose national titles are over that distance or are they 12 round fights. Pretty sure they are over 10 rounds tbh.
Anyone know?

Re: FURY AND ROGAN TO FIGHT FOR IRISH HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Brilliant. Fury vacates the British title because he's petrified of Price, despite the fact it's much bigger money and against tougher opposition and fights for a less prestigious title against a 40 year old who hasn't done anything for a few years now.
Still, I'm sure it's the right move to prepare for a world title.

Re: FURY AND ROGAN TO FIGHT FOR IRISH HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
I think you summed it up there, This is not a press release I'd be proud of. Surely he was cringing at least a little writing it. Actually probably not. Fury hammered Chisora, look what's happen since (as in fights and in the ring) I guess next up defending against Coleman Barrett.Finch wrote:Brilliant. 10 rounds, like the majority of national titles as far as I am aware.GlobalBox wrote:Does this mean it will be 10 rounds are Ireland one of the countries whose national titles are over that distance or are they 12 round fights. Pretty sure they are over 10 rounds tbh.

Good to see he has dropped those tinpot titles and stepped up for something worth having!
Yeah I said it, and what!

Re: FURY AND ROGAN TO FIGHT FOR IRISH HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Fury isn't petrified of Price. Price is the most overhyped British fighter by a long distance.Finch wrote:Brilliant. Is a fight against Price really a much better money fight than this one?

Re: FURY AND ROGAN TO FIGHT FOR IRISH HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
I have visited Dublin twice. I'm expecting my application to fight for an Irish title sometime soon!
Re: FURY AND ROGAN TO FIGHT FOR IRISH HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Well, its not as if the precedent hasnt already been well and truly set in Britain! Correct me if im wrong but Howard Eastman and Bruce Scott (a couple of names that instantly just come to mind) werent born in Britain and yet fought for the British title... and no big deal was made of that?yiddo14 wrote:I have visited Dublin twice. Not to mention how many foreign nationals currently play for the English Rugby Union team as well as the many overseas born athletes currently representing Team GB.
At least Fury actually has Irish blood in him... the Irish State will provide an Irish Passport/right to citizenship to persons who can demonstrate that they have an irish-born grandparent.
To this effect, I dont find it strange or unreasonable for Fury to fight for the Irish title.

So why did he vacate the moment Price became his mandatory?Horse wrote:Fury isn't petrified of Price. Price is the most overhyped British fighter by a long distance.Finch wrote:Brilliant. Re: FURY AND ROGAN TO FIGHT FOR IRISH HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Lloyd Honeyghan banjoed Sylvester Mittee for his welterweight title in 1985, then Kirkland Laing finished Mittee in similar fashion. Thats three British champions in a row and not one of them from Britain or with any British blood in them! Dreary me!yid14 wrote:I had a pint of guiness, first defence?
Chisora, Bayaar, Andries, Olusegun, Ochieng, Oboh, Oyebola, Ekubia, Napa, Ampofo, McAlinden, Max Maxwell, Gomez, McGuigan, Bugner, Laing, Honeyghan, Tanveer Ahmed, Funso Banjo, Rebel Roche, Najib Daho, McKenzie (all of them inc Ovill!), I'm sure I could go on. It's a boring subject, the Brits are the worst offenders but somehow always the first to point the finger.
Fury will be the first fighters to fight for an Irish title that didnt have an Irish parent. How many of the above had British parents?

Didnt they make Team Price an offer to fight them on Channel 5?Finch wrote:So why did he vacate the moment Price became his mandatory?

Vacating the titles doesn't mean that he is petrified and it also doesn't mean that he thinks that he would lose to Price.Finch wrote:So why did he vacate the moment Price became his mandatory?
Is Price overrated? Yes, he is based on people claiming that he is world class because he beat the fattest ever version of John McDermott.Finch wrote:Re Price - is he really?

It is only funny when people are joking about "Plastic Paddies". You don't win an argument by making silly statements like that, instead you admit defeat.

It always amazes me how certain English people can be so vocal, in a dismissive and negative way when a person born in England expresses their affection for their Irish heritage... I suspect I know the reason behind such a reaction, but anyhow...

Touchy sods ain't you!?
I was only pissing about. I have Scottish and Italian ancestry. It's about how you see yourself. I'm English. Simple enough for me. Fury sees himself as something different every other week. His choice, and good luck to him, just fairly amusing I think.
All for expressing affection and celebrating ones heritage. I don't agree with people born and bred in a certain country only to then talk down about it and its people and seek to be connected with somewhere else, a place where more often than not their grandparents left because they were seeking a better life with more opportunity. I know a couple who fit this description and they are fecking eejits of the highest order...I suspect they would be glad to have such a label!
