Osteoarthritis and running :( please help

Post by Crazyboy »

I have a real problem with arthritus in my left ankle and well basically it stops me running.

However, what i don;t seem to have an issue with is cross-trainer as its non impact on my ankle.

My question is, running seems to be the top cardio weightloss/ fitness exercise, but is cross trainer as good? If not are there any other non impact exercises that will work me as hard as running?

Sorry for the basic question but it will really help as i'm piling on the pounds a bit

I can't pretend to be an expert on this issue, but I reckon it depends how hard you push yourself. I've just started using the cross trainer again as I'm having trouble with my knee, I tend to go pretty hard on it for shorter periods. 4x6minutes perhaps and just go as fast as I can. Generally I burn calories quicker on the cross trainer than the treadmill.

Cycling?
Aqua jogging?
Concept 2 Rowers?
Crossfit?

Plenty of other stuff out there you can do that'll work you pretty hard.

It's not so much a question of what is better, more of how you do things.
You could spend a day climbing the biggest hill you could find and it would get you into better shape than an hours running.
It's about finding something that you enjoy, and is easily accessible. I wouldn't be able to spend a load of time on a cross trainer but its (nearly) an adequate substitute. Hardly stimulating though.
Have a look and see if there's any crossfit gyms in your area. It'll get you in excellent shape and it's interactive enough to keep your interest. I don't doit myself cos I've got too much on with swimming and cycling to have time, but it's next on my list. Then when my legs are smashed and I'm too old to do the stuff I do now it'll be golf.
Always an alternative.

Good RT (weights) routine is more effective for fat loss than any CV as it is anabolic (muscle building) which makes results much more sustainable. Most of my clients train with me for fat loss and we don't even touch a CV machine. The routine(s) I'm using give some CV results as well - people get out of breath big time.

i have had some unreal results with my clients using vibration training for pain relief from many forms of arthritis. the circulation and bone density improvements seem to help sufferers of these conditions improve a lot in a quick timeframe. look into it, give it a try and see how it goes for you.

Whilst it's true that a good weights routine will aid fat loss by increasing metabolic rate it's misleading to say that weight training is better for fat loss than cardiovascular exercise.

The cross trainer is brilliant. Scraps piece of kit is better.

Impact can help delay the onset of osteoporosis so you need to speak to a specialist as the impact might be a good thing.

No it is not.
Cardio (especially the steady pace kind) is not anabolic - doesn't build muscle. Therefore it only helps you lose fat by burning it during the actual workout. This is a very ineffective process as you can probably only burn about 500-700 kcals per session. Doing nothing will probably burn about 300 in the same time. 1 kg of fat = 8000 kcal, so do the maths. Not only this, aerobic training puts a lot of stress on the body, causing it to release cortisol (catabolic hormone) and supressing testosterone and HGH production (anabolic hormones). When I train people with weights (say 4x/week, 45 mins at time), 1kg of fat loss in a week is good average result (as long as their diet is fairly clean).
Now OK, of course I've seen diligent people losing weight by doing cardio, the closest example being boys in my boxing club. But ask yourself a question: why do they have to do it time after time, on and on again? And those are young lads - 16-20sth y.o., with fast metabolism! The answer is: because in their training they are not building muscle mass which in turn would make the results sustainable. By training with weights you're building muscles which increases your metabolic rate, meaning the calorie burning effect of training lasts 24/7.
