European Olympic Qualifier

Post by mike222 »

This starts on Friday in Turkey and my idea of the qualifiers (draw permitting) are as follows
49(5) Paddy Barnes Ireland (winner)
Salman Alizada Azerbaijan
Ferhat Pehlivan Turkey
Hamza Touba Germany
Alexander Alexandrov Bulgaria
Koryun Sogmonyan Armenia and Charlie Edwards represent the dangers
52(3) Nordine Oubaali France (Winner)
Selcuk Eker Turkey
Stefan Ivanov Bulgaria
Olexandr Shepelnyuk Ukraine and Alexander Riscan Moldova represent the dangers
56(4) Denis Makarov Germany (winner)
Vyacheslav Gojan Moldova
Furkan Menis Ulas Turkey
Pavlo Ishcenko Ukraine
Razvan Romania and Abdulhamidov Azerbaijan are the dangers
60(4) Albert Selimov Russia (winner)
Fatir Keles Turkey
Artur Bril Germany
Vladimir Saruhanyan Armenia
64(1) Zdenek Chladek-only one place available
Artem Zaytsev Russia is the big danger
69(2) Balacks Bacskai Hungary and Magomed Nurutdinov Belarus should claim the two spots available
75(1) Russian Maxim Koptyakov should win the only spot
81(3) Joe Ward Ireland is a hot favourite and Muzzafer of Turkey and Simone Fiori Italy could join him in London
91(1) Bulgarian Tervel Pulev may claim the only place-Whoever represents Germany will be a danger
+91(2) Magomed Omarov Russia should win here and may be joined by Victor Zuyev Belarus may grab the other spot. There are a lot of dangers though in Filip Hrgovic Croatia Tony Yoka France Roman Kapitanenko Ukraine and Mihail Nistor Romania which makes it interesting

And David Oliver Joyce only beat Brill in Germany a few weeks ago, I think Joyce will do it.

I fancy Ireland to qualify Joyce, Barnes and Ward and maybe Sheehan and Nolan if lucky.

What's a draw in superheavy - in the same quarter are: Zuyev, Kapitanenko, Hrgovic, Omarov and Muntean

interesting first day bouts:

Katende (SWE) - Ward (IRL) in 81kg
Zuyev (BLR) - Kapitanenko (UKR) in +91kg

Well we have both lost one with Topcakan losing 12-14 to the Frenchman Anthony Bret.I couldnt see anyway he could lose in Turkey. However it is encouraging following the home bias in last years European Championships.

Vaguely, after the 1st round I believe scores were tied at 2-2, after the 2nd round scores were tied at 4-4. Apparently Selimov got a very nasty cut in the 3rd (didn't say whether clash of heads or anything), which caused Maxwell to be more aggressive, ending in the fight eventually being stopped because of the cut. Apparently Maxwell was well worth the win though.

Apparently the scores were level at the end of the second but in the third Selimov sustained a bad cut on his cheek and the doctor stopped the contest. If I were Selimov I would turn pro, losing in the two qualifiers to a cut and a disqualification suggests a change in direction.

Sounds like yet another controversial decision as the Russian Maxim Koptyakov, goes out to the Turk at 75kg. Apparently the Russian was leading by 1 point going into the 3rd, got a public warning, and loses on countback as a result.

Anthony Ogogo also through in another close encounter, he was down 12-6 going into the 3rd, and then comes back to win on countback with a score of 14-14.

Paddy Barnes qualifies alongside Ferhat Pehlivan,Manuel Cappai and Alexander Alexandrov.
At 56 Merab Turkadze,Magomed Abdulhamidov and Pavlo Ishcenko qualify with Ceylan.
Anthony Ogogo moves into the semis and is one win from qualifying. He will face Belarussian Vitaliy Bondarenko.Tommy McCarthy is also into the semis and needs two wins to qualify. He faces Moldovan Vladimir Cheles and then if successful probably Russian Omarov.
In a big upset Russian Maxim Koptyakov lost on countback to Turk Adem Kilici.
Eight Turks are in the semis.

No predictions are fun-and we can redeem ourselves with the three qualifiers to come.
Interesting to read the Russians view on the Koptyakov/Kilici fight on www.rusboxing.ru.They have no complaints with their man losing two points to Warnings.
The Russians are generally fair with their boxing.
The semis do have a lot of different countries involved which must be good for the sport.

Incidentally it may not be over for Joe Ward-there is still an invitational spot for a european at 81 and who is more qualified than Ward.Start lobbying Mr O Neill.
