Re: Who are the most famous boxers to fight at bethnal green?
Johnny Tapia is a good one maybe not most famous but plenty of character there
Re: Who are the most famous boxers to fight at bethnal green?
John H. Stracey fought down there in the late 60's and early 70's. Joe Bugner also fought down there a few times.

Lennox Lewis fought there back in 1990 in the early stages of his career he fought Noel Quarless. And Joe Calzaghe had a fight early in his career as well against Frank Minton. Plus Chris Eubank fought there four times as well and Nigel Benn in 1988 as well.

I think Rosario - Randall was at York Hall yes mate
Re: Who are the most famous boxers to fight at bethnal green?
It was.
Fantastic venue.
Ruiz and Miranda have also fought there.
I'd have thought just about anyone who's anyone who came up domestically has fought there on their way up - Froch, Benn, Watson, Eubank, Lewis etc etc

A few WBO champs have had title fight there Alfred Kotey, Jacob Matlala , Julio Pablo Chacon.
Re: Who are the most famous boxers to fight at bethnal green?
I went to see my cousin fight there alot, and I got to sit inbetween Herol Graham and Lloyd Honeygan (pimped up) doesn't get much better than that! I'd say Ricky Hatton was the most famous boxer i've seen box there though. It's spit and sawdust. Best boxing venue ever.
Re: Who are the most famous boxers to fight at bethnal green?
I dont know about famous...
But the 'biggest' was Nikolai Valuev.

I remember Tapia being quite special seeing him there.
Re: Who are the most famous boxers to fight at bethnal green?
It was my dream to turn pro and just behind that was to box at the York hall. I have now done both and its now my dream to headline it for a title that would be amazing.
Most boxers would probably agree with me that for us its not the best venue (changing rooms are rough) but for pure atmosphere you can't beat it. I've boxed there twice now and have lived both of the fights cos you can feel the energy in there.
Great venue so glad it was saved from closure who knows in a few years time i might be one of the names listed on here as the most famous to box at the York hall.

Re: Who are the most famous boxers to fight at bethnal green?
hiya mate- i believe the Rosario - Randall fight was originally scheduled on an east coast show (i have Miami in mind) but for whatever reason it fell through fairly late in the day. whoever the promoters were they had a relationship with Mickey Duff I believe, who offered to put the fight on an existing York Hall bill a couple of weeks later. bennie would know the details much better but i believe that was the basic gistJeff Thomas wrote:Rosario randall what a fight , what's the story there anyone?
my favourite moment of that broadcast was the yank commentator commending the 'sportsmanship' of the british crowd, who gave a standing/roaring ovation for a good part of the 9th round and 10th round as Randall rallied and fired back, even on wobbly legs, after being badly hurt by i think it was a left hook by Rosario. the ring was pelted with coins at the end of the 10th
Re: Who are the most famous boxers to fight at bethnal green?
As a venue Shoreditch Town Hall was better than York Hall.

Re: Who are the most famous boxers to fight at bethnal green?
it was a tremendous fight, yes (not that I was there haha), Randall's slick boxing built up an early lead before Rosario's hammer-fists got him back into it, very close fight in the end i think a quarter or half point from the ref swung it. I can lend you the dvd if you want?Jeff Thomas wrote:wow I bet it was some fight stylistically they match up well anyone see it... Re: Who are the most famous boxers to fight at bethnal green?
I was there that night, great memories, tremendous fight, great will and skill shown by both men.
Rosario won it on last round by the old fashion half a point scoring, i can't remember his trainers name
but if he didn't have a good round he used to smack rosario on his back to gee him up it certainly worked
as he came out for the last !.
At the time mickey duff had a deal with NBC , in the US to beam fights back , which started here about
10 o'clock on a sunday night to the east coast at 5pm ish.
I was also there for james kinchen vs buster drayton, same deal, same year, Boza edwards was also on
the rosario show, mark kaylor, kirkland laing, michael watson , were also featured.

I'm pretty sure Carl Froch has fought there 5+ times.
I saw him there against Brian Magee.
Venue close to my heart as I grew up in Bethnal Green
