"Former world boxing champion Damaen Kelly has been ordered to undertake 120 hours of community service after being convicted of assaulting his former wife.
A community-based penalty was deemed appropriate in this case Kelly must also serve two years on probation.
The 39-year-old former WBF flyweight champion, from Monagh Road in Belfast, initially admitted assaulting the woman during a drunken row at the couple's home in April 2009.
The attack happened in front of their youngest child. Kelly was acquitted by a jury last month of a charge of wounding his former wife with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm.
Freeing the father-of-four, Judge Gordon Kerr said that while the courts would normally consider a custodial sentence, a community-based penalty was appropriate in this case."
Sad to see this in the news today. Always thought he seemed like a nice guy outside the ropes who just came up short on a few occasions to reeling in the bigger titles, no defending what happened here though drink fuelled or not.
