Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
Enzo Maccarinelli has joined forces with former world title challenger and fellow Welshman Gary Lockett on a temporary basis as regular trainer Enzo Calzaghe continues his dispute with the British Board of Boxing Control.

Gary was a top boxer and an inteligent man; he's a good trainer and Enzo could do far worse (and not much better). I can't se how the first aid thing has gone to this for Enzo C; seems silly to me.

Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
Lockett was a lame boxer with a boring career. Hopefully he will be better as a trainer.palooka wrote:Gary was a top boxer and an inteligent man; he's a good trainer and Enzo could do far worse (and not much better). I can't se how the first aid thing has gone to this for Enzo C; seems silly to me.

bollox he was at one time brit p4p top ten and could bang he wasnt boring at all let alone lame.
Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
Lockett could be called a few things as a boxer, but boring is not really one of them.
Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
He was never a top 10 P4P British fighter and probably wasn't ever a top 30 P4P British fighter either.J wrote:bollox he was at one time brit p4p top ten and could bang he wasnt boring at all let alone lame.
Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
Agreed. he was decent at British level but certainly not a top 10 british fighter at all weights.Horse wrote:He was never a top 10 P4P British fighter and probably wasn't ever a top 30 P4P British fighter either.J wrote:bollox he was at one time brit p4p top ten and could bang he wasnt boring at all let alone lame.

What was the point of his career? He never won a British, Commonwealth or European title.states wrote:Lockett could be called a few things as a boxer, but boring is not really one of them.

Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
Unfortunately I don't think anyone can help Enzo at this stage. His now non-existent punch resistance means -no matter what new tricks he might learn- as soon as he gets clipped he's going over.
Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
Sadly I agree with this, his career was pretty much a non-event in terms of achievements. A fairly padded looking record, was he a Warren fighter if my memory serves me correct? The WBU belt is another clue to the Warren thing maybe? Then took a massive step up against Pavlik, couldn't handle it at all, then retired.Horse wrote:What was the point of his career? With a career of 30 wins and 2 losses you'd at least want to be having a few trophies on your mantelpiece, a Lonsdale belt, and English belt, maybe a Euro. Have to wonder what was going on there or whether he was happy to trubdle along in the shadows cos he knew he might get beat by the top Brits?

THATS WHY YOUR LISTS ARE SHIT.
he beat ryan rhdes and lee blundell ffsake.
Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
He was a very decent boxer with a heavy punch + you've said more derogatory things about him in a few posts than Lockett did about anyone in a 12 year professional career.Horse wrote:What was the point of his career? Yeh but it was in the Ryan RHodes 'blip' years and to be fair who is Lee Blundell in the annals of history?J wrote:Horse wrote:He was never a top 10 P4P British fighter and probably wasn't ever a top 30 P4P British fighter either.J wrote:bollox he was at one time brit p4p top ten and could bang he wasnt boring at all let alone lame.

Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
I reckon Enzo hired him to learn locketts 'death stare'

Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
Indeed. Rhodes might not have even been in the top 10 of the middleweight British rankings at the time considering his form, and if Blundell is considered to be a big win for Lockett then I think that says a lot about his lack of achievements as a pro.TheCobra wrote:Yeh but it was in the Ryan RHodes 'blip' years and to be fair who is Lee Blundell in the annals of history?
Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
Ive a Feeling Gary is going to be one to watch as a Coach, was as a Fighter. Intelligent Lad.
Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
You can't polish a turd. Enzo needs to retire!
Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
Gary is a good, young trainer, sure as a fighter, he could have accomplished more but then again, how many fighter can say that? Quite a few, I would imagine.
What's with Enzo continuing his dispute with board about? Surely you'd think,' Just do the 1st Aid thing' and get on with it? A bit too much ego and pride getting in the way, me thinks.

Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
unfortunately it seems to me lockett was badly managed in his career, he must have been encouraged to chase pounds and not recognised titles, this has made him financially ok but in the long run he will look back and yearn for a lonsdale belt in his front room.Horse wrote:What was the point of his career? the boxing coverage on tv did not help at the time, they wanted alphabet title fights and not recognised titles. yes it filled arenas and boxers pockets.....but the important mantlepiece memories are now not there!
Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
I don't believe it was through a lack of wanting on Gary's behalf that he didn't chase the more prestigious talents but rather Warren taking safety first fights at the time and having many of his fighters inactive. He was certainly good enough for euro level, maybe a World against one of the weaker champs. He would have beater Sebastien Sylvester in my opinion. His power is unquestioned. But at the end of the day, Title belt's on your mantle piece don't pay the bills and Gary has a future outside boxing which many who were on top don't so he is a success story.
As a trainer, if anyone can get Enzo to train and perform I believe it will be Gary. He is developing a reputation as a trainer. He knows his stuff, has a proper nutritionist on board and is Enzo's best chance at performing well. He knows Maccarinelli from their days in camp Calzaghe so knows whats needed to motivate him. Enzo still has the skills and power, but his chin is gone and that is obviously what will need to be protected via a good defence. Since becoming a trainer Gary has made Gavin Rees into a british champ, and euro champ. If Pryce wins his next one he will be in line for a British shot, Kept Ricky Owen (left camp) unbeaten and was arguably in line to win prizefighter until a cut ruled him out of the final, has a great young prospect in Lewis Rees, and got Jeff Evans to the Welsh title. Overall, in a 3 year time period of training i think most trainers would be very pleased with this.

Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
If I'm correct, I remember Gary never was actually in love with the sport. I'm sure he'd pick the decent nest egg over a Lonsdale any day. What gets me with this topic is how many people seem to assume picking up a title is a Devine right in the pro's. Speaks volumes about the state of the sport that a career is deemed pointless if this isn't the case. What is every other fighter that didn't win 1 if this is the case? Cause Gary was far from a bad fighter.
As for referring to a former wbu, wbo, euro and current British champ as a 'turd' ....I'm speechless. Some1 who beat names like Hobson, Scott, braithwaite, Dominguez etc. is a 'turd'.

You can't teach an old dog, new tricks.
Re: Maccarinelli hires Lockett!
Lockett being "far from a bad fighter" is what makes it so bad that he didn't face many good opponents over his career. He was a pro for about 12 years and he hardly achieved anything.stevieb_8006 wrote:What is every other fighter that didn't win 1 if this is the case? Cause Gary was far from a bad fighter.
How many other talented British fighters have had a career as unambitious as Lockett's? I can't think of any at the moment.
Enzo might officially be the British champion, but I consider McPhilbin to be the true British champion.stevieb_8006 wrote:As for referring to a former wbu, wbo, euro and current British champ as a 'turd' ....I'm speechless.
