Light heavy---- Cruiser

Post by colin russell »

The weight difference between Light Heavy & Cruiser is 11.33kg the bigest difference in all the weights. Just a thought but if we had a weight in between Light Heavy & Cruiser (maybe around 85kg ) I would think we would have MORE boxers. That difference in weight is to big for some fighters that are running around at say 90 to 95 kg on a normal day, but once get back into hard training will get to say 82 to 85 kg with out having to get the sweat bag on or go to the sawner. Now if we had a weight division say at 85kg we would not only get more fighters but also better fights. In Australia we have a lot of fighters at heaver weights and if we had a division between Light Heavy & Cruiser I think we would have more. Jnr Cruiser 85kg. Your thoughts please, also Brad Vocale has this weight ever been discussed before? :yay:

Not really. The Cruiserweight division was brought in for the smaller heavyweights, initially at 190 pounds then 200 pounds. I think the increase in the weight limit would indicate that the organisations were not happy with the 190 pound division, so I could not see them accepting another intermediate division.

Light heavyweight has always been 175 pounds (79.38kg). You are thinking of cruiser weight which was originally 190pounds (86.2kg).

ANBF introduced Super Cruiserweight (95kgs limit) in early 2000, but the division never really took off. Inaugural fight was between Phil Gregory & Danny Buzza – Gold Coast 2003.
One or two years later.....I think??, world organisations increased Cruiserweight limit to 90.71

Brad was behind SC divvy, so he can explain the reason for it. Unsure if Vic Control & NSW Authority ever accepted the division.
ANBF eventually ditched it couple of years ago & also increased Cruiser to 90.71

All good but im saying a division between Light Heavy & Cruiser. The Cruiser division is great but a division in between the 2 would be good, not supper cruiser but Jnr Cruiser.

It would have to be named Super Light Heavyweight, which would probably generate ridicule as did Super Cruiser.
What you're proposing is no different to what it was. Brad pushed for Super Cruiser 'cos there were guys around 88/90 who couldn't get down to 86, so at times had no option but to fight guys at 100+
Probably the very reason world orgs increased Cruiser limit to 90.71

I remember Costa Chondros fighting James Ellis for the vacant Australian super cruiserweight title about 5 years ago. Chondros won the fight and the title, but I think it was dissolved straight afterwards.

I know it won't happen, but personally I'd rather see cruiserweight pulled back to 190lb. I don't buy the arguement that a 195lb guy cannot be competitive with big heavyweights, as history has proven that they can be. Most of todays top, non Klitschko heavyweights (Povetkin, Adamek, Chagaev, Chambers etc) wouldn't may much more than 200lb (and in the case of Chambers, much less) if they were in the best shape possible. Then consider that if these guys were fighting at a lower division, what challengers would the Klitschko's have? The heavyweight division is barren enough as it is without removing the best small heavyweights.

Sorry to go off topic, but I think the division you are suggesting has already been named: Dannyweight!

That was in Aug 2007, but he held onto it for a while, and ANBF couldn't ditch it until he relinquished. Unsure if it was ditched @ 2008 or 2009 AGM (Usually held around Oct/Nov)
BTW, Buzza/Gregory was an absolute farce. Gregory simply didn't want to fight & did everything possible to get DQd. He eventually got his wish.

Boxrec shows Chondros fighting Daniel Ammann only 3 months after winning that vacant super cruiserweight title, and there's no mention of the title against the Ammann fight. It looks like inside 3 months of winning that vacant title it was no more.

At the time Costa was still the titlist, as I inserted the following comment in results:-
Chondros lost his Australian Super Cruiserweight title in non-title bout.
I deleted this, after discussing the result with ratings chief John Hogg. It was a bit messy as it was scheduled over 10 rounds = de-fcto title defence. However, he was restricted to around 90kgs limit.
Therefore, he must've relinquished at some stage in 2008 & announced retirement.

There's to many divisions already adding another is not the solution it will just water down the current light heavy/cruiser divisions with smaller cruiser moving down and bigger light heavys moving up!

Good post, I agree entirely. As I said, I would rather the admittedly large - 25lb - gap be reduced by bringing cruiserweight back to a 190lb limit, but that's not going to happen. I'm sure Danny Green would have liked a 185lb division, he was never big enough to beat the best cruiserweights (just think what a young Evander Holyfield would have done with him), but after his short retirement he would likely have struggled to make light heavyweight.

I think there should be a 190 pound division, Also push cruiser out to 205. At least then there is an even spread. i also think Super Middle is to close to LtHeavy.

Agree with people to some degree on this topic. But there's too many weight divisions already and far too many titles in each division. Every time another division or another title is added the cordial mix gets that bit weaker, and it's as weak as piss already :!:

The major reason the better fighters avoid each other is because they can division hop and accumulate titles and money at will against opposition that barely challenges them.
