I have to admit that qualification is confusing me.For the three Olympic weights there seem to be eight places available but each continents quota is limited to 4 per weight and one of those could be for a developing nation. So the only way you can be assured of qualifying is to finish in the top three. However Africa for example may not get one quarter-finalist but they are likely to get invites in that case.To confuse even more Wikipedia detail a completely different qualifying procedure.
Now the seeding which is haphazard as usual-no seeding for Claressa Shields or Sofia Ochigawa which means Englands top middleweight Savannah Marshall will take on Shields in the prelims. At Flyweight Nicola Adams may have to get past the brilliant Indian Marykom in the quarters as she is only ranked 7.
Anyway my selections for the Olympic weights are listed for the top 8

Based on the athlete bios posted, the 3 Olympic weights are going to be massive. There are 64 entrants at 60kg, 59 at 51kg, and I think like 46 at 75kg. I'm kind of excited about that.

Finally figured out how to look at the draw sheets, but the live tracker doesn't seem to be working yet.

In the Olympic weights:
http://88.85.4.2/results-draw-sheet05151_E.html
http://88.85.4.2/results-draw-sheet06060_E.html
http://88.85.4.2/results-draw-sheet07575_E.html

Claressa Shields' draw was to be the most interesting, with her recent publicity and not being seeded. She opens against Pooja Rani of India, then Savannah Marshall of England if she wins. The winner of that would then fight Norway or Kenya for a spot in the last 8.

EDIT - sorry mike, see you already had this all figured out

It's a shame for Shields, in that a lot of expectations had been placed on her, and so the disappointment and embarrassment of losing is going to be tough for such a young person. Hopefully she can use it to get better.

The continental fighters Shields built her reputation on - Spencer and Feitosa - also both lost, so the Europeans are showing well at this weight.

It's all about the fundamentals. I feel that currently, European boxers both male and female have better fundamentals which comes from good coaching and the training of coaches.
On a side note, does anyone know if the US has an official in China? Looking at the results of the bouts, I don't see a US official working any bouts and it will be unbelievable if they don't have an official there. smh

In the Olympic weights there are 48 boxers remaining,as follows
Europe 26
Asia 16
Americas 5
Oceania 1
Bearing in mind the most Europe can have is 12,it is conceivable that all the American boxers will qualify and certainly one more win for Esparza and Underwood pretty much seals their place.
I think you might be a little harsh on boxers outside of Europe-Ren Ren Can,Marykom,LI Jinzhi.Spencer and Feitosa are all current world champions and multi title winners and European world champion Tatar also lost today.

Yeah, I edited my post after my first draft was definitely reading too much into it. But at that weight, Europeans really took out the best of our continent.

Has it been figured out what the qualifying will be? I was still under the impression that the top 8 at each weight qualify automatically, and then four additional spots at each weight will be doled out to underrepresented continents.

Ah I see the wikipedia page has been updated - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_at_ ... lification

So all of Oceania's spots are already locked in and Africa has one so far. As I understand it then, with 2 Americas spots coming from placement at 75kg at this tournament, and 0 boxers from the America's left, those spots will be determined by who lost to the best finisher out of the 5 that advanced to the 2nd preliminary round. Which is:

Spencer (CAN) lost to Laurell (SWE) who faces Fidura (POL) next
Guillen (DOM) lost to Fidura (POL) who faces Laurell (SWE) next
Carmona (VEN) lost to Durnyeva (UKR) who faces Shen (TPE) next
Feitosa (BRA) lost to Vystropova (AZE) who faces Turcin (ROU) next
Shields (USA) lost to Marshall (ENG) who faces Lien (NOR) next

Since Fidura and Laurell fight, of Spencer and Guillen, one will be in good shape and the other will be out. Durnyeva is the highest seed of those, with Marshall 2nd.

At 75kg, Asia still has five fighters left for one spot. Africa also has one spot, and no fighters left - the spot will go Heijns of South Africa, Andiego of Kenya or Ogoke of Nigeria.

To continue this analysis (sorry if its evident to everyone, I am just learning it):

at 60kg, the Americas get only one spot, and have two fighters left - Queen Underwood of the USA and Adriana dos Santos of Brazil. Asia has 7 remaining for 2 spots, Europe has 7 for 3 spots, and the African spot has 0 fighters left, leaving it for Rim Jouini of Tunisia - the only one to make the 2nd preliminary round.

at 51kg, there are three Americas fighters for two spots - Esparza of the USA, Erica dos Santos of Brazil, and Karlha Magliocco of Venezuela. Europe has 9 fighters for 3 spots, Asia has 4 fighters for 2 spots, and again Africa has lost all its entrants, leaving Ongare of Kenya and Rahali of Tunisia to wait and see who gets the spot.

Asia has 2 spots at 51, so Cancan Ren, Mary Kom, and Kim Hye still need to keep winning. The winner of Petrova and Michalczuk will be guaranteed a spot, while the loser will still have a chance. Both of the African fighters' opponents lost, so I guess they have now transferred their hopes to new fighters. Marlen Esparza has clinched her spot, but is fighting against Cancan Ren and for the benefit of Christina Ongare of Kenya, I think. Magliocco and dos Santos are still in competition for the 2nd Americas spot.

Queen Underwood is out, since the Americas have only one spot at 60kg and it went to Araujo of Brazil.

At 75kg, only one of the five Americas hopefuls went out - Guillen. It seems like Edith Ogoke of Nigeria should have qualified. Perhaps Rabih of Morocco is still in it, even though she lost her first fight, because her opponent Strohmaier is still in it? :-? Or perhaps they just haven't updated the wikipedia page yet.
