Tomatocan Stan Johnson

Post by Alister »

I don't know if this is the correct forum to be posting this subject in, but since he hasn't fought since 2002 I will consider him inactive and a "boxer of the past".

Looking at Stan Johnson's http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=092488 record, I think it's a legitimate question to ask wheter or not he ever even tried to win his fights. I have heard that he was a reliable padding for promotors who wished to fatten their prospects record, and that coming in to lay down was just a way for him to make some fast extra cash. His real job was training Gerald McClellan, Johnson was the Chief cornerman in McClellan's corner during the tragic fight with Nigel Benn in 1995.
Anyway, I find it odd that a world class fighter like Gerald McClellan would hire a guy like Johnson to work his corner. Surley having such a dubvious character like Johnson around would bound to ruin some of McClellans credibility. I mean, a guy who comes in to lay down more than likely knows other "fighters" who are in the "same business", right? Wasn't McClellan ever afraid that people would think that his fast KOs (21 in the first round) were fixed?
Just a thought.

Stan Johnson was only the lead trainer for McClellan in that one fight. Johnson had his tomato can stable long before he hooked up with McClellan. McClellan's cousin, the legendary Donnie Penelton fought for Stan Johnson. That's the connection there. Gerald wasn't the easiest guy to be around and its possible he didn't really feel like listening to a real trainer.

Donnie P. is the G-man's cousin?? F*ck me - next thing we'll learn that the even-more-legendary Reggie Strickland is also a close relative. :P

Thanks for the info.

alistair, mcclellen was a kronk fighter trained by emanuel steward.

you only have to watch his tapes to witness his terrifying and 100% legit power. nobody would question this.

stan johnson was brought in after gerald got with DK. DK had all kind of shitty trainers and yes men to keep his stable in line with him.
