European Junior Championships 2012

Post by mike222 »

This competition starts at the weekend and will showcase the best under seventeen boxers in Europe.Russia will expect to dominate and they have twenty current or former European schoolboys champions to call on more than all other countries combined.I havent yet seen the entry lists but we can expect the national champions to compete. There are three defending champions eligible to compete in Timur Pirdamov and Tamerlan Batydev from Russia and Ukrainian Victor Petrov. However Batydev lost in the Russian nationals such is the competition there.
Boxers I will be looking for are Russians Murat Pliyev and Georgi Popov who look exceptional as well as English competitors Sahir Iqbal,Reuben Arrowsmith and Muhammad Ali who caught the eye at the recent domestic championships,Scotlands Aidan Mcglynn and Wales two British champions Jamie Evans and Jonathan Clatworthy.Ireland will of course have a good team led by the impressive Michael Gallagher.
With the Championships being held in Bulgaria the home nation will expect at least a couple of golds and they can call the likes of Katin Asenov,Blagoy Naydenov and European schoolboy champs Mastan Marinov and Gospodin Minchev.
The Ukraine will field a strong team as will the Azeris who will have big punching Muhammat Tairov and Araz Gulmmadov who both won silvers at last years championships.
Turkey and Armenia will also be strong.

I have had a chance to look at the draw and I dont think it has been to kind for British and Irish boxers.
Starting at +80 Aaron Kellys first bout today is against the Russian Kerimkhanov and that may be beyond him.My medallists are Angelov of Bulgaria,Komor from Hungary,Kerimkhanov and the Azeri Tairov although he faces a strong Armenian today.
At 80 I expect Michael Gallager to medal where he might face the Russian Vasilev.Bulgarian Naydenov and Ukrainian Zilatdinov may be the other medallists
At 75 Brian Wall faces a Romanian and possibly a Turk to medal and that will be tough. My medallists are Russian Magomedov,Turk Atmaca,Bulgarian Savov and Armenian Manasyan.
At 70 Welsh athlete Jonathan Clatworthy faces an Ukrainian and if successful probably a Russian.Very difficult. My last 4 are Russian Kholov,Turk Karsli,Hungarian Toth and Bulgar Ivanov.
At 66 I think Reuben Arrowsmith will medal possibly Silver whereas Lewis Crocker and Jamie Evans are in a really tough quarter and will do well to reach the semis. My last four are Arrowsmith,German Krischanowski,Russian Kovylin and Ukrainan Tokarchuk
At 63 Daryl Byrne has been eliminated.Medallists may be Turk Ozturk,Bulgar Popov,Russian Azimov and Barsony from Hungary
More to follow.

At 60 Wayne Kelly and Hamza Hussain face the not inconsiderable Morokhin from Russia to medal. My last 4 Avci from Turkey,Bulgar Todorov,Azeri Guliyev and Morokhin.
At 57 I like Sahir Iqbal but he will have to get past a tough Romanian to Medal but I am hopeful whilst Darren Pollock has a nightmare draw.My last four Tereshchuk from Ukraine,Iqbal,Russian Plemenichenko and Moldovan Cvasiuc from that tough quarter of the draw.At 54 John Joyce will have to beat Euro champ Viktor Petrov to progress and will deserve his medal if he can whilst John Ruddick could medalk. My medallists Ruddick,Petrov,Russian Kristov and Bulgar Doychev
At 52 Peter Mcgrail faces a tough Georgian and then Probably a Russian-Difficult.Not easier for James Cleary who has a Romanian and a useful Azeri in his quarter.Italian Colell,Bulgar Blagovestov,Russian Vizirkhanov and Azeri Yusifzada are the likely medallists
At 50 Brandon Daord faces a Georgian and then probably the Russian. My last 4 Bulgar Asenov,Azeri Aliyev,Russian Pirdamov and Ukrainan Ishcenko who is a likely last eight opponent for Kalum McConville.
At 48 Jason Mckay has a good medal chance and may be joined in the last four by Russian Bammatov,Azeri Shafizada and Bulgar Kolev
Finally at 46 Martin Stokes has an Ukrainian and a Russian in his quarter and that is hard.
My medallists Ukrainian Lapin,Daniel Asenov from Bulgaria,Turk Kirsuleymanoglu and hopefully Englands Isaac Milburn

Interesting: very lucky draw was for host bulgarian team (12 of 13 boxers - exception: 57kg)
In their quarters no Russians, no Ukranians, no Turkish, no Azeri, no Irish, only one English
and a lot of Czech, Slovak, Israeli, Moldavian, Hungarian, Bosnian and Cyprus opponents.

Well spotted I missed that, the only tough draws are at 57KGS and 66KGS-If Ireland had those draws they would be celebrating a hatful of medals.
Jason Mckay has won at least a Bronze today with a comfortable win.
