Is Tyson Fury unfairly criticised?

Post by lefty »

Here's my personal take on it, I think that because he is a traveller, because he's pretty gobby at times and also the fact that up until very lately he's come into fights flabby and in poor condition he gets labelled as being a 'bum' and rubbish by a large percentage of people. I can't deny that at the moment he is facing subpar opposition but I think thats to do with Hennessy rather than Fury. I think Hennessy is on his last legs as a boxing promoter at the moment and if Fury were to lose his deal with Channel 5 would be up the creek and he'd be pretty much screwed! So you can understand from his perspective why he's scared of putting Fury in with one of the top guys at the moment. From ours ie the boxing fans perspective its obviously not a positive state of affairs though. People constantly compare him to David Price and say how Price will destroy him if and hopefully when they meet and im a fan of Price and Fury's as I think they both are talented. You have to ask yourself though who has Price actually Beaten to say he would destroy Fury if they meet? The two guys that stand out on his record are Mcdermott and Sexton. Starting off with Mcdermott, yes Price beat him in better fashion than Fury did but does that actually mean Price will beat Fury? I dont think so, it just means that Price is a bigger puncher than Fury is which I and 99 % I think would agree with. Going onto Sexton, well as good a domestic level fighter as Sexton is, he was tailor made for price! First off he isnt a big puncher and secondly he likes to stand off and box at range like Price does. However with Price's size and reach Sexton was never going to win that battle and he also didnt have the power to make a dent when he did occassionally get through on Price.

In conclusion I think Fury is a talented boxer who can become a world champion, I also believe he has a better chance against Price than a lot of people are giving him. Anyway, there's my take on it. What do you gents think?

He was criticised early doors because he looked dreadful in every respect - and he was hyped to go with it.

He's improved a great deal.

Here's a take on his current progress:

He's starting to box quite nicely, esecially as a southpaw. But until he's given a meaningful fight who knows?

I dont think he always looked dreadful though to be fair. He looked decent against Chisora who I know was out of shape but still he boxed well and he looked good against Mcdermott in the rematch I think.

He needs to move up, that's my main gripe.

Though I think the team aren't too interested in putting him in any risky fights now they've got a cushty deal on Channel Five.

Yes. At the start of his career I was first to say he was a muppet and would get stopped as soon as he stepped up. He's growing on me a little bit each fight. He showed that he can box which I didn't see happening. I still think Price knocks him out.

He definitely needs to step up his opposition but in fairness he has been very controlled in his last two outings and has looked in far better shape too.
I wonder what a top class trainer would do with him, I'm not convinced that having Uncle Peter train him is best in the long run.

I think he is slightly criticised unfairly. I have criticised him a lot myself, his technique was awful but he has come on in recent fights and I can see the improvements he's made.

The biggest criticism of him is his level of competition. Him and his team bang on about him being ranked this and that, in the top ten etc, well if you think you're top ten material how about fighting someone in the top ten?

Either keep fighting this level while you grow and keep your mouth shut, or actually go out and prove you deserve to be ranked as high as you are and back up your big mouths!!

i think, with furys new improved condition, his new used jab and his improved movement, he is twice the fighter that 'struggled' against john macdermott (who at the time was considered just fractionally below british title level)

his is infairly criticised and for 3 reasons.

a) when he turned over his dad was stupidly banging on about him boxing the ears off george foreman and KOing michael spinks. Prob the best thing that coulda happened to him was his old man getting taken off the scene.

b) He was a bit of a gobshite to get himself noticed when it really wasnt needed.

c) the price situation. though no1 ever mentions that Price refused to fight on 5 as well. I dont see why its solely Tysons responsibility.

I think he gained some momentum and level of respect with the chisora win, then threw it away with the next two underpar performances. Now people make out that win means nothing cos chisora "didnt train". Like that excuses Fury winning pretty much every round in a shut out.

At least he seems to have knuckled down now, though i would love to see him with a decent manc trainer. Bob Shannon, Oliver Harrison, Joe Gallagher, even Arnie Farnell. Think they could all do well for the lad.

If people criticise him now then it's unfair. But back before the Rogan fight he deserved it because of the condition he was rocking up in at times. He's now clearly taking it seriously and putting in decent performances to boot.

Yes, he is. He is currently the most unfairly criticised boxer in Britain.

How many top 10 fighters regularly fight other top 10 fighters? Only the champions regularly fight against that level of competition, and Wlad hasn't fought a top 10 opponent since he fought Haye just over a year ago.

Why is Fury held to a higher standard than everyone else?

I don't think so. He has hyped himself up massively, given two fingers to the haters on that recent video, opened his mouth on many occasions and has really fought one good opponent of note in his career in Dereck Chisora and was well beaten by John Mc Dermott and somehow got the decision.

You can do all the talking you want saying your great but when your saying that and fighting guys who are not decent and no where near the HW rankings of any of the sanctioning organisations. You are definitely going to come in for criticism.

In my eyes, he asking for the criticism for the way he carries on with his mouth and mouthing off about fighters who he thinks he can beat.

Tyson fury isnt that good hes got no chin! He's ok as far as domestic boxers go and will be chinned when he moves up. Chisora and Haye would both beat him. Fury has looked good recently because he's fought no one, the last guy was a stiff and made Fury look like a world champion. I'm not slagging the guy hope he does well but as soon as he makes the next level he will be found out.

think fury deserves all the grief he gets, personally i am sick of these giant heavies not boxing with any degree of confidence or authority, they are frightened to death of getting hit and woefully underuse the jab, at the end of the day any world class heavy should of gotten rid of maddalone inside a round.

I think he's improved a huge amount and is starting to look a real decent prospect. He's 23, and possibly the youngest HW prospect inside top 30.

A lot of people mention his two defeats to price in the amateurs without mentioning he was, what 17 first time with price being 23, and 18 second time with price being 25 not to mention David having had a huge amateur career as appose to furys relatively short one.

He looks, sounds and handles himself like a much better pro now than he ever has before.

He has already beaten Chisora pretty easily. Haye is a top 5 heavyweight in the world, is Fury meant to be crap if he loses to Haye?

Firtha, Pajkic, Rogan and Maddalone are good keeping busy opponents. Fury has had 5 fights in the last 12 months, he shouldn't be expected to take on a world-beater every time.

Pajkic is ranked at 50 by BoxRec which is higher than Price's best opponents: Sexton (63) and McDermott (81).

I think they need to keep Fury busy. Keep him in great shape. He’s young and I believe improving a lot.

Only 23. He’s got years to go yet. In the meantime he’s getting good exposure on TV.

Would love to see him get a TV commercial.

We love to hate in this country - Fury is progressing well, he's staying busy, he's got into shape, he's beaten his immediate domestic rival in Chisora. Then because he hasnt fought price he's suddenly some bum - massivley unfairly criticised imo.

Fury is moving in the right direction, I'll give him that. I don't expect him to remain unbeaten for long when he does step outside of domestic class though.

One thing that constantly irritates me is the Chisora "victory" being used as proof of something. It was plainly obvious to any neutral observer that Chisora was struggling with himself as much as he was with Fury, who was very lucky things happened the way they did.

"Victory"? Don't be silly.

Fury beat Chisora, he deserves credit for winning that fight. Fury didn't just nick the win close on the cards, he won the fight clearly.
