William Gare v Robin Reid in Malta - WBF title

Post by turbostar »

Gare only lost narrowly to Oosthuizen last year, so this is a tough fight for Reid, not sure why he's still going and fighting 12 rounders at his age.

Tony Dodson also fighting a 12 rounder for some trinket, Paul Edwards and Joe Selkirk are also on the card. Strange one :KO:

That's actually been around a while. One of the more established titles going around these days!

Damn, Reid is totally shot, I've always liked him but he needs to retire, surely.

Yeah he did, between his world title fights with Calzaghe and Ottke he was a WBF champion. His fights were shown on the BBC.

I believe he call himself a three time Super Middleweight World champion - WBC, IBO and WBF!

Forgetting about the title this fight will certainly test how much Reid has left. He probably starts an underdog, if he wins then fights with the likes of Paul Smith in eliminators will be deserved. I'm not sure he should ever contimplate a fight with Groves / Degale at this stage of his career.

Actually sounds like a half decent card. I wonder if allegedly will pick it up.

It was the Maltese federation that was the only one backing up Luxembourg, wasn't it? Aren't the WBF and Luxembourg federation linked in some way?

I don't think they were the only ones backing up the (now expelled) LBF...then again, it was a contact with Malta connections who told me this

Gare is a good 12 round fighter. Lost 15 (against decent opposition) but never been stopped. He only has an 11% KO rate but I can't see Reid lasting 12 rounds at this stage. I think, despite Gare's KO rate, that Robin gets stopped in this one. Probably rounds 6-8 and probably from exhaustion rather than anything Gare does.

Is this fight still on?

I remember watching loads of Robin Reid WBF defences on daytime BBC when I was a wee nipper.

The entire card was called off at the start of the month. Not sure why it's still up on Boxrec.

So are you saying this show is cancelled? If not does anyone know who Selkirk is fighting

It's definitely cancelled, it was called off a couple of weeks ago. At the time Selkirk posted on his Twitter that he regretted turning pro and that he was retiring though that was hopefully just heat of the moment stuff.
