Danny Williams, and so it continues

Post by Old bones Ian »

Danny still won't retire, he's now down to fight Janne “Finnish Butterbean” Katajisto on Sept 8th in Finland.
I know enough have said on here that they want Danny to retire, but it seems he can get a licence from anywhere and continue so it ain't going to end soon

Thats a funny sort of statement Martin, the world is full of people who worry about relatives, mates etc boxing or doing other sports, especially where the participants themselves aren't concerned. Danny has built up such a level of respect for his performances that people don't want to see him risk his health.

How much money makes the fate of Ali, or Watson, or Ingle, bearable, or worth suffering?

I see what your saying BUT he is a MAN and if that's the choice he makes let him get on with it, if friends and family is begging him to quite then maybe he should listen if he doesn't and something Bad happen's then i wouldn't feel bad for him... Harsh but thats the way i looked at it.....

little bit...!

I take your point, he is his own man, but especially when it comes to the injuries associated with boxing, the person labouring under them can't always see them for what they are.

I love boxing and I hope that comes through in everything I write about it, but it always troubles me deep down that my enjoyment in a sense is founded on that sort of damage, I'm obviously too young for Ali, but I grew up knowing about Watson, Ingle, McClellan, to name only the highest-profile cases.

As much as someone is boxing to earn a living by fighting, and I appreciate them doing it because I enjoy watching it, that doesn't automatically mean, for me, that I can dismiss the risk they take by saying 'it's ok, he chose to carry on'

Him thinking he should go on isn't enough of a reason for him to be allowed...

In any other ''dangerous'' profession (eg Lumberjack, Fireman, Soldier, etc, etc) employers would fire anyone who was a danger to themselves, through diminishing physical attributes. For insurance purposes? Yes... but also because of a moral obligation to the man and his family. Commissions have the same obligation. It should never be left up to someone to decide their own fate, but I'd agree that Danny would still beat most journeymen. He's boardline compared to some.

Danny will get punchy, if he isnt already.

Encephalitis is scarring of the brain from it being repeatedly crash from one side of the skull to the other.

Now unless his brain is made of something other than flesh, tissue and connective nerves... it will happen.

Should we deem any of the boards that licence Danny to be unworthy and declare all fights under their jurisdictions to be unlicenced?

Just heard about this. Sad really.

If any guy needs to reitre write a book, it's him. I used to not be a fan of his, but he's kind of earned my respect. He's had so many highs and lows in his career. He's had two reigns as British champion, won a fight with a dislocated shoulder, beat Mike Tyson, got spanked against Klitschko, fought on the Ricky Hatton vs Kostya Tszyu undercard, had that controversial second fight with Michael Sprott in which he was booed and called a cheat and ended up disallowed from fighting in Britain and grabbing himself a European license to fight bums abroad. Almost every stage of his career is worth hearing stories about from boxing fans.

When they bring out an autobiography for every game contestant these days, it's a wonder nobody has approached Danny Williams to hear his story.

Not solely on the grounds of licensing Danny, but if its part of a contributing pattern of behaviour that warrants it, then why not?

Without wishing to trivialise what happened to Jonjo Finnegan, its quite apparent that it can occur in any fight to any fighter. If you keep rolling the dice, sooner or later you get the numbers you don't want to see. The difference is, the dice have no memory, while the brain's odds of safety are decreasing not only with age but with repeatedly having the same question: does that hurt? asked by the end of a 10oz glove.
