Why do they do it ??

Post by dalcumly »

How many times have we heard of outstanding boxers losing several fights at the end of their careers to opponents who could not have qualified as sparring partners ?

Of course the main reason is not that they simply can't walk away, but that they're skint .

I just cannot understand how young men ,mostly from deprived backgrounds , are allowed to earn huge sums of money without someone ,older and wiser , stepping in to ensure that some of it is invested safely for their future . For a manager , if they really cared , it could be relatively easy . A contract is taken out stipulating that 'x' amount is taken off each purse and put into a trust fund which can't be accessed for some time in the future . Moreover , a lawyer can be appointed with 'power of attorney ' to ensure that the trust fund is not used to repay money borrowed during the career .
I've just read Herol Graham's biography ,and found myself being sad and angry at the money he threw away when he was in his prime . I've been trying to think about top boxers from the past who seem to have kept their money -Jim Watt springs to mind, as does Barry McGuigan . Marvin Hagler seems to have done OK , and Dave Green is thriving . There's a few more - but not that many .
You just feel like putting a fatherly arm round seem of these lads , and pointing them in the right direction .

There are a few guys who have held onto their money, but in this day and age its not an easy thing to do. When a boxer gets his pay, he has to outlay alot for costs to trainers, managers, promoters etc, and add to that his tax bill.

The other thing is who to trust? Boxing isn't renowned for having the most honest guys looking after boxers. For me you'd have to trust a manager an awful lot to let him invest money.
What alot of people that earn out of sport forget is its an awfully short career, and you have to earn huge amounts to be able to live comfortably for the rest of their lives. If you have a million quid in the bank, then you can expect £40,000 a year in interest.
There are hardly any boxers from the UK that have earnt a million in their careers, the best they can hope for i think is to be mortgage free when they retire

It depends at what level they were at.

The reality is that most boxers don't get paid what you think as well.

There's British champions out there making less money than people working in supermarkets.

Barry McGuigan ?
The man who lost everything sueing Barney Eastwood ?
The problem is that everyone assumes boxers are well paid.
Simply not true even at British / European level.
By the time Board Tax has been paid, expenses, Trainers Fees, etc etc etc then income tax it soon nets down.
At elite level fair enough big purses to be earned but how many UK boxers get to that level ?

I would argue that Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn earned a lot of money but I'm not sure if they are wealthy now ??

I think the problem is that when the boxer has a chunk of money he invariably thinks he'll be a successful businessman; lots lose their hard earned money in half arsed and ill thought out ventures.

I know a man who put his money into starting up a window-cleaning business, and he now has the ear of David Cameron :salut: .

If you weren't so intent on building a state of the art private porn viewing system with 76inch telly etc you could invest in a small business and become, overnight, A Master Of The Universe (just like me :OhYes: )

What makes you think my post was even about you, palooka? Are you the only person who cleans windows and offers advice to our Prime Minister? Vanity, plain and simple. :shame:
