Jack Gardner

Post by coreygardner »

Jack Gardner, the British and European Heavyweight Champion, was rated as No. 8 in 1950 according to Ring Magazine, Rocky Marciano being No. 10 at the time.

Does anyone have any newspaper clippings from Jack Gardner's career?

Gardner had 7 first round KO victories, any info on that?

I found a news article that had him losing by TKO after 2 rounds to Joe Bygraves, due to cuts.

Gardner was never knocked out, his two TKO losses being due to cuts, and he was only knocked down once, by Kitione Lave, and he ended up winning the fight.

His record is in the data base here. He beat Bruce Woodcock who fought Marciano. Gardner had a good record. Nice fighter.

Yes, if you have ever seen Gardner's fight with Johnny Williams in 1955, you could see how much power Gardner had in both his hands.

I got a story about Jack Gardner, from the pages of Bartley Gorman's book:

"Jack Gardner, the former British heavyweight champion, was on the look out for a protege and took Sam (Gorman) under his wing. He said Sam had the best jab he had ever seen. He also wanted me (Bartley Gorman) to sign for him but I said, "No I'm a bare knuckle prize fighter. I dont fight with women's powder puffs on my hands." I didnt really mean it. Eventually Sam was lined up to have his pro debut on Jack Solomons show at the Cafe Royal in London. A few days before the bout, Gardner called him to one side and said, "Look Sam, I have got alot of influencial friends coming to this show. I dont want you under any circumstances to let me down." "I'll tell you what Mr. Gardner," said Sam, "I'm letting you down right this minute." He grabbed Gardner's hand, shook it, and walked out. It was gypsy pride: he wouldnt be talked to like that by anyone."

That seemed pretty stupid on Sam Gorman's part.

Did they mention Gardner at any other time?

I am American and I've seen pictures of British Heavyweight Champion Jack Gardner, and he strongly resembles me, he is related somewhere down the line, maybe 50th cousins or something.

He seems to have been rather famous in Great Britain back then.

How famous is Jack Gardner today in the UK?

What about John L. Gardner, is he still remembered, or have the British forgotten his name?
