Never ever watched one before (I like boxing. I do not like soap operas), but this weekend I caught the second episode of the Martinez vs Chavez one.

& fvck me, it was great. Julio son of Julio's vacant stare as his old man stays up chain-smoking & watching videos of Sergio; Jr's odd sleeping habits, his frankly bizarre body language & mannerisms & slightly stoned-looking, generally out-of-it appearance. His insistence on belly-flopping every morning into his private pool. Freddy getting fvcked right off when Jr cannot be bothered to turn up to training, despite having got Freddy out of bed to train half an hour before. Sergio Gabriel's genuinely pissed-off demeanour, simmering quietly whilst his trainer barbecues the biggest steaks I think I've ever seen. Chavez jr's awful choice of underwear.... Sergio sleeps in a hyperbaric chamber, & gives the old Marvin Hagler response when asked what his secret is: "I get up at 4 every morning, & go to work. That's it. That's my fvcking secret". Compelling stuff.

Not sure if I could glean anything new from it, but I did reach some conclusions:

1) Julio's old man could probably take Jr. right now, despite spotting him forty pounds.

2) Sergio's trainer (Pablo Sarmiento? Didn't he fight Michael Ayers & Colin Lynes over here years ago?) can actually take those shades off. I assumed before watching this that they were grafted right on to his face, but apparently not.

3) As long as Sergio doesn't get old & they actually check for diuretics & whatever the fvck else they have to pump into Jr to get him to make eleven & a half stone, he's going to kick the ever-living fvck out of Chavez. Really. The difference in technique, even when they're doing basic drill stuff, is immense. I mean, it's like they're competing at a different sport: Chavez can't throw a straight punch without giving you notice by telegram half a month before; when he opens up to go to the body you could park a battlecruiser in the gaps in his defence.

Yeah, same here. If Chavez was really a middleweight, wasn't a drug cheat, wasn't a complete spanner & wasn't a silver-spoon-fed scion of someone whose shoes he'll never fill even if he gets feet implants, I'd still like Martinez to humiliate him, just to fvck Sulaiman right off. The news that Sulaiman (head of the organisation sanctioning this, remember) has laid a big bet on his godson (yeah. I know. 1) watch the aforementioned 24/7 thingy above, & check out Dumb-arse Jr's pants. No, really. Anyone who wears underwear like that deserves a proper shoeing.

2) He gains at least a stone & a half from weigh-in to fight, & has been caught for diuretic use (drainy-drugs) before. He's going to be the bigger guy by at least one, maybe two divisions when these two get in the ring. Anyone with any sense of historical propriety, or fvck it, anyone who likes watching fair fights, will be delighted once Chavez starts getting a kicking from a bloke who is as tall as Nigel Benn & who gets in the ring within at least spitting distance of the divisional limit.

3) Martinez won the world title (fvck off, Arthur Abraham, you monging dwarf & the ridiculously boring Felix Strum) from Pavlik, who won it from Taylor, who won it from Hopkins, who beat the shit out of everyone. Well, SGM not only merits the invocation of Boxrec Rule 77, he went above & beyond the call of duty by actually fighting the dude the rule was created to honour, & he beat him, not once, but twice. 7) Sergio's hip wiggles, showboating & hands-down style annoys purists like my old man. It makes me rumble things like "Get your bloody hands up, FFS". I think this means I'm getting old. If Martinez wins this, I will actually start getting younger.

8) Despite being speedier than a speedy thing, Sergio's footwork isn't very good. He suffers at least one off-balance knockdown/slip thing almost every fight (Paul Williams I, Pavlik, Macklin, etc etc). I don't know why this makes me want him to win, except that I always cream over blokes with old-school footwork, & this aberration makes me reassured I'm not getting stuck in my ways just yet.

Great work Datsue! I'm proper routing for Martinez. Chavez Jnr doesn't half come across like a spoilt so and so. Call me old school, but in my book what your trainer says, you do. Pissed me off to not only see Freddie Roach catering to Chavez Jnr's weird timing but also getting stood up after Chavez can't be arsed to turn up.

Martinez has done it the hard way, faced the better opposition and has the skills to make Chavez Jnr look silly. I think the 4/9 outright on Martinez and 3/1 Martinez inside was pretty generous. I've had a nice pop at both. War Maravilla!

You have to feel sorry for Chavez Jnr in many respects. He doesn't have anywhere near the passion for the game as his old man does. In fact you could almost say Snr is living out a second coming of his career through his son. There's a classic scene in the 24/7 edition you're talking about where Jnr is wading in the pool with his old man barking tactics poolside. Snr is going mad. Jnr just looks totally bemused.
