Billy Britton question

Post by klompton »

Hi guys Im curious about two entries on Billy Britton's record:

1923-05-31 Jack Marlowe Royalton, US W KO 4

and

1924-03-03 Honey Kingbee Hurst, US W TKO 7

Im curious what the source was for these I would like to track them back and see if I can find more information about these bouts. My grandmother lives in Royalton and its a very small, former mining camp. During the period of these bouts it would have been larger (since the mines have shut down now) and was possibly held at the Miners Hall or one of the two theatres (all torn down now) or even a ballfield. Id be interested in knowing how this fights even got promoted there.

Hurst is even smaller, and also a mining camp, about 5 miles from Royalton which I pass through every time I visit my grandmother. Hurst as well was likely larger back in this era but I cant for the life of me figure out where the fight would have taken place. Unless, again, it was at a ballfield, although that would be unlikely in March around here.

Any help anyone can provide would be appreciated.

Found them. Had to go around to the local libraries in those areas and look at the microfilm but they were there (I still couldnt find the actual result of the Royalton bout but I did find its advert).

A correction needs to be made. The Bill Britton who fought Sailor Bishop in Memphis in December of 1928 was a local Memphis lightweight. Not the middleweight/light heavy who fought Greb and Flowers. I think there is another bout on Britton's record that belongs to the Memphis lightweight but I need to go back and look through my notes.

The fight in Royalton was held at the Royal Theatre. The building still exists and my cousin Irv worked there during the depression. Its now a machine shop. During this era it had no air conditioning, no bathrooms, no marquee, no concessions, and only wooden benches. The ring was likely erected on the stage with one side backed up against the curtains. Im not positive but I think Jack Marlowe who Britton fought there promoted some of Brittons fights in nearby Herrin, Illinois.
