...I'm currently volunteering for a charity which supports members of the community with some mental health issues, in a residential supported living environment. They are quite independent and are encouraged out into the community as much as possible (often on their own).
One of the men used to box when he was younger and is really interested in the psychobiology surrounding the sport. I've taken a few of my DVDs and magazines in for him and I've had a chat with the staff about the discipline, focus and tactical thinking involved in the sport. He's never even mentioned anything to me about brutal knockouts etc, as he's really interested in the marginal things like channelling emotions in a productive way in order to be successful. It makes him think about how the best use their attributes to the best of their ability and turn their weaknesses into strengths through increasing awareness of how opponents will try to exploit these things.
He's requested footage of Joe Louis, Holyfield and Ali. I have much of this footage already on my hard drive, but I don't know how to get it all onto DVD. Most of it I play using VLC Media player. If anyone could explain how to convert files, it'd be much appreciated and also which kind of blank CD is should use.
Once I know what I'm doing better (for getting this footage to him), I'm going to try and introduce some of the interviews of Jim Jacobs to him and other sporting psychologists. If anyone can recommend others like Jacobs I'd be very grateful, and so would he. The guys only 29 and I think he has enough time to turn his life around, if he can better channel his feelings.
I'd like your thoughts, the management at senior levels have been very supportive ... but I'd like to know if anyone has any further advice or can help me out with the type of footage I'm after.
Please PM, or post here. Thanks for your time.
