Chris Eubank vs Carl Froch

Post by Tomasino »

The Calzaghe v Froch thread is very popular so I thought I'd see what folk think of this matchup. It's great to see polls with so many voters.

I think Eubank at his best has too much of everything for Carl. Maybe Froch is stronger, I don't know. Great fight.

Tough one to call. Certainly this would have gone the distance and maybe Froch's better workrate would have allowed him to eek out a close points win as Eubank may not have thrown enough punches.

neither man would be able to stop the other, it would be a 12 round war, eubank poses and postures too much, that would lose him rounds, froch would be high octane for the duration.

Im going for 117-114 in favour of froch.

unless IJL is a judge...then expect 119-111 to eubank !! .... ;;-)

Sorry, in the fantasy world I created for Froch v Eubank, I also had IJL tarred and feathered and relegated to reffing the footy at the tin pail. :OhYes:

Froch. Eubank found Collins a nightmare for his reach, unorthodox approach, strength and workrate; all things that Froch has in abundance.

Be some fight; distance and probably Froch on points though he would get smashed time and again by Eubanks' right hand over his low left.

Eubank via late stoppage. Eubank can match Froch in pretty much everything and surpass him in a fair few. He would put dents in Carl and wear him down.

Nigel Benn would have knocked Froch out, Herol Graham would make him look stupid, Michael Watson, well that's a hard fight to pick. Roberto Duran, Hagler would knock him out, Hearns i'm not sure, Ray Leonard would piss all over him. Jake Lamotta Ray Robinson would stop him. Who else can I think of? Roy Jones no need to comment. Froch would have beaten Tony Sibson, John Mugabi would have knocked him out, Alan Minter, well I think Froch would have beaten him. Vito Antoufermo, Yeh, again another win for Froch. Mark Kaylor, yeh again I think Froch would have won.

BUT

Benn, Eubank and Graham no contest.

Would have been a fvcking barnstormer!

Love both but I'm gonna plump for Eubank, in his prime and on top form. That version of Crith could possibly take Calzaghe.

Froch vs Toney? Toney boxes Froch's ears off. It would be a pugilistic masterclass, and maybe even a late stoppage. If Taylor could put Froch over Toney certainly could with his excellent timing and accuracy (I mean the Toney who fought Iran Barkley and "Prince" Charles Williams, not today's Toney).

Barkley would have beaten Froch. James Toney also, we are in different eras. Back in the 80's and 90's these guys are completely differnet to what we have now. Froch in the 80's world champion? I do not think so, in the 90's yeh right again bollocks.

The fighters we have now are not the same as 20, 30 years ago. Complete shite now there is nothing worth fighting and nothing worth beating, end of!

Yup, pre Watson tragedy Chris was a great fighter IMO. Understandably he lost his will to destroy people afterwards. He was still very good then.

I think prime Watson would beat Froch too.

Michael Watson would stop Froch, I'm certain of it.

Froch gets a lot of credit for going and facing the best from around the world, which Eubank certainly didn't do, whereas Benn did half a job.

Watson for me was the most skilled and accomplished of all the British 168lb'ers.... he executed Benn, lost a razor thin fight to Eubank and made him look like a mug in the return.... gave McCallum a hard fight too - the same McCallum who'd have wasted both Benn and Eubank.

I kinda agree that there isn't the talent depth around that there was 20 years ago, but Froch has fought everyone available. None of the other Brits went in with Toney or Jones, and only Watson fought McCallum.

Exactly. If Leonard, Hearns, Toney, Jones or Mccallum were around today Froch would have fought at least some of them. Not so Eubank. Wether that was to do with the Watson fights we'll never know. Your post sums up exactly why, even though the head to head I pick Chris, Carl Froch is the more accomplished world champion boxer. :TU:

Id say Eubank because i think he would have beat ward - but what if froch hasnt actually peaked yet i know he's getting on but what if bute wasnt over rated and Froch steam rolls another couple of top names? I wouldnt then put him in a completely different league.

I'm surprised so many on this thread talk about Froch being stopped by the likes of Eubank, Watson and Benn. Of the 3, in my view, the only one with the power to stop Froch would have been Benn but Benn wasn't exactly iron chinned himself and for me Froch would have been as likely to stop Benn as Benn would to stop Froch. Really don't see any way Eubank or Watson stop him.

I'm from the Eubank era and this is classic rose-tinted specs approach. Carl has fought at a higher level on a consistent basis and you're glossing over the fact Chris was in some absolute shockers.

I agree. Watson to be fair didn't have amazing super-middle form and probably was a little small and vulnerable at the weight. Benn loved a tear up but probably would find himself outboxed by a Froch if Carl played it smart. I also agree that Eubank would pose the hardest challenge. At his best Chris probably had the skill and accuracy to keep up with Froch, and it probably would have been very close on the cards. I think only Benn could realistically have stopped Froch, BUT only if Carl forgot his boxing and engaged in an all-out war, (which knowing Carl's and Nigel's mindset could have been the case!)

Eubank had a good solid chin, he could take a punch and was a devastating puncher himself. You only have to look at the later rounds with Watson. If Eubank was around today he would have been a world champion at super middle. Froch is winning because there isn't anything worth beating. We are in a lull of 'super' champions at present that's why he is a champion. Benn Eubank and Watson and almost certainly Herol Graham would have dominated the division today. I'm sure Steve Collins would have beaten Froch too. We had some super talent 15 years ago saying that the US did too.

Devastating puncher ?

Malinga took Eubank to a split decision and then 12 months later, a novice Roy Jones wiped the floor with Malinga in 6 rounds.

Where are the top boys like Toney and Jones on this giant killer's record?

Sorry to disagree but Froch is everything you've just said with regards to Eubank and doesn't have Chris's habit of switching off - far superior work-rate. Froch would have stopped Benn at Super Middle and has far more proven pedigree than Watson at the weight. Froch against Collins would have been a great tear-up but I'd favour Carl to come through it on close points. Calzaghe would be the only one I'd take to beat Froch prime-for-prime from the Brits at Super Middle.
I don't believe the division is as weak as you're implying - Ward and Kessler definitely wouldn't have looked out of place in that era, for example.
