What will Ricky do?
i never seen tonights fight,
so i can't comment on how badly ricky performed, but i believe it was poor

but considering he has had a resounding victory over malignaggi in the past and the fact that malignaggi lacks the power to cause any damage to ricky. i'd give it a shot if he gets the opportunity. why not?

generally, i was of the opinion that if ricky lost tonight and particularly if he looked bad doing it, he should retire.
but being given a world title shot at paulie malignaggi, i'd take it.

i'd expect ricky to lose, as malignaiggi has matured into a good wee fighter and ricky, it would appear, has simply matured....a lot.
but i'd say it's a risk worth taking.
the damage is done and he's ballsed up his return.
for me it does no damage to his legacy, he was a lightwelterwieght champion who won just about all there was to win at that wieght, two wieght world champion and shared the ring with the 2 best fighters on the planet. this comeback attempt doesn't take anything away from that for me.
so i see little risk in getting a genuine world title shot against a guy with only 7 KO's on his record. if he loses he loses. he already beat the guy when he was in his prime, if he loses he can just put it down to being past it

his comeback can't be considered any more of a failure as it does now. so what is there to lose

there is very little i'd say ricky should ever consider continuing his comeback for, but this one may just tempt me

He didnt perform badly he was winning quite easily for the first 4 rounds and senchenko looked like he was going to go early imo then his head movement dropped off, senchenko started landing fairly easily and hatton was trying to land the big punches he used to be able to land but his timing was off so he was missing wildly. He would have probably still won if senchenko hadnt landed a seriously great body shot. It was either inactivity or age that got to him and that was clear but he certainly didnt embarrass himself - senchenko couldnt even go around claiming he beat hatton, he beat a shell of hatton and only just managed that.

One thing is for sure he would have no chance against paulie on that performance it would be a wide UD, unless he could get his timing down in training. However i think you have a good point its a no lose for hatton he already beat paulie so if he loses he can categorically say he is just past it, its big money and hatton is unlikely (other than cuts and a hard night) to get injured or KO'd. he could have it as a farewell fight , also no one would be expecting him to win now.

Schaefer is a greedy, mercenary fornicate. This will be the true test of what the guys around Hatton e.g. Speak, Poxon, Shannon, Jackson, etc, plus Rick's family, really think of him. They all seem like decent people, so I'd like to think they can park the gravy train up and dismount.

I'm not against Hatton fighting again on the proviso he's got his head sorted out AND he tunes up properly i.e. boxes lesser opponents first to see if he can steadily return to championship class and win. Throwing himself to the wolves is not smart.

Golden Boy used to have a lot of bluster about being different, being for the fighters. This would add to susbstantial existing evidence that this is contrary to the truth.

although shaeffer is a business man so will spin it any way he needs to to make money this statement is pretty true -

"Everybody had agreed that, prior to the fight, that Ricky had picked a difficult fight for his first one back after three and a half years out of the ring. So, having said that, I have to say that he looked very good, and that he was ahead in the fight, and that he was ahead on the scorecards. I have to say that in the first five rounds, in my book, they all went to Ricky Hatton."

My thinking is that Hatton is just going sit about wondering if it was ring rust that cost him the fight and end up trying another comeback in a year or so. Id rather see him in with Paulie than someone who can bang, who he's beaten before and can retire happy if he lost. Unless he can retire happy for good now, then he should just do that, i think he will take the fight if offered.

Saying he looked 'very good' is simply not true. However, I only had him a point down after the eighth. In saying that, he was also losing the ninth, would have lost that one 10-8 had he managed to get up and the contest was slipping away from him.

Even in the rounds he did win, he looked a shadow of his former self and won them on sheer will and pressure which he couldn't maintain.

I hope he stays away.

I thought he looked good considering the backstory, i thought he looked good for the first 4 rounds certainly, the last couple of rounds were hard to watch. I have to say i slightly misread the quote.

Id like to see Hatton have a retirement party type of fight , someone who he should beat so that he can go out with a win , wont matter who its against as long as its someone he can beat as everyone would be well aware of it being his final hurrah .

Schaefer's shown himself up here. If he gave a flying fvck about Hatton he wouldn't be talking about putting him in world title fight.

I think it would have to be against someone half meaningful for hatton to consider it.

he should gracefully stay out of the ring and only return if hes promoting or in another fighters corner, hes had a great career but he simply just has not got it to compete at world level anymore, yes can say he was ahead on scorecards but he missed a lot badly and slowed down a lot during middle rounds and to be stopped but a great body shot granted but shenchenko is not a known big puncher either because if he was a big hitter hatton would of got knocked out a lot sooner with him walking onto straight rights all night.

thank you ricky for the memories and I had you are at a good place mentally and stay safe for your family and enjoy a happy retirement

About their fighters, surely. Hatton isn't one. No doubt that the fight would be good news for Malignaggi.

Please tell me this isn't true? :o :oo

Hatton is the oldest 34 year old I've seen; facially he looks in his 40s & sadly, he now fights like someone 50+.

Hatton is beyond finished & they need to stop flogging the dead horse that is Ricky Hatton.

The man has abused his body & given even more to the fight game & he just needs to be left alone now.

My immediate reaction to the fight was that the assumption that Hatton HAD to retire was a bit over the top.

Now, I don't know how anyone else scored the fight but I had him 6-2 up when the KO came, and it was a punch that would have stopped him in his prime, perfectly timed and right on the money. I agree his timing went awry as he tried to step things up but it would not be an entirely revisionist history for him to say "well, I went in pretty tough for a comeback fight and a fringe world class fighter caught me with a world class shot - aside from which, I did okay".

It would be wrong for him to go into a world title fight straight away, of course. But if he decides it stills feels good, he ought to carry on - accept a more tailor made opponent in late February/early March to get back to winning ways then look at what opportunities are out there - sadly, Paulie will probably have lost his belt by then, but there will be plenty of people keen to give Ricky a title shot because he brings genuine PPV appeal and a massive fan base.

No way was he 6-2 and I also disagree that would have halted him in his prime - we'll never know, of course - but he went in with bigger punchers and managed to survive.

Hatton is never a welterweight, if he can't make light welter then he is making right decision. Much of Hattons game was wrestling and he simply could not wrestle a strong welter. This is the way his career needed to end for the good of Hattons life i think. He even said that post fight

I hate to say it and I mentioned it on another thread but I really do think this fight will happen.

The cynic in me thinks one of the big reasons for Hatton choosing now to come back was because Malignaggi won a world title. No one expected Paulie to go to the Ukraine and win the title, but he did and as soon as it happened we get Hatton making waves about a comeback. I think Hatton thought he'd never get an easier route to a comeback world title because he'd already steamrollered Malignaggi. Big money comeback and a chance for Ricky to wear a World title again without putting his body at too much of a risk because Paulie isn't a hard puncher. Hatton 2012 is essentially a businessman and this fight would make money.

The sad thing is it still will. Paulie will want the pay day. Golden Boy will want the pay day. Hatton certainly wont turn the pay day down but more to the point I believe he will genuinely convince himself he can beat Paulie. More to the point Goldenboy will do their level best to convince Hatton he can beat Paulie.

Hatton needs to get talking to Calzaghe, Steve Collins etc and learn how to walk away. He has nothing left to prove and he gave fight fans- both avid and casual, some of the best nights of boxing excitement for the best part of a decade.

Good post.

I think you've nailed it TBH.

It wouldn't surprise me if a Malignaggi fight happened, but I hope to goodness that it doesn't.

I just hope someone can convince him to walk away whilst he still his wealth & health.
