Boxing News feature
who at Boxing News did the feature on me last week (the one with my record)?
I have a comment on the last bit. It may be true that I will be put on the "who wants him" list after my win against Hibbert, but I am certainly not looking for a rematch with Steve Conway. I would not gain anything by that. Without being bigheaded, I personally feel that I would stop him if we were to fight now, but a fight with him would be pointless. What they should have said was, "a couple of 8 rounders or possibly a 10 rounder, and then Dean should be looking at fighting for some form of title."
If Conway was champion, then I would be interested in a rematch.

Any chance of trying to get a small piece in next week's based on what I have just said?bennie wrote:I assume that would be George Zeleny's "Zany File". I haven't seen last week's BN yet.
Basically I want people to know that I really do plan on fighting for and winning titles, rather than just making a few quid being a contender, which is what the article kind of portrayed.
Appreciate it.

Talking of good Boxing features, there is a good piece in the Midlands saturday evening sports paper "Sporting Star" or the pink as it's known locally. The full page Boxing spread which is ever improving had a feature on our own forum contributor Peter Jackson this week just gone, it detailed his achievements so far and how the fight with Ryan Rhodes helped him a lot financially, well worth a read if you get hold of it.
That's written by Richard Lakin, an excellent journalist and frequently on this forum.steve689 wrote:Talking of good Boxing features, there is a good piece in the Midlands saturday evening sports paper "Sporting Star" or the pink as it's known locally. Yes, there is a web link (http://www.expressandstar.com) and then go to 'other sports' under the sports section. Trouble is, I can't find the feature when I do that. If nobody else can find it, I'll contact Richard tomorrow.Kevin wrote:Have the got a website, can you subscribe?
Kev
Yes like i said i am an avid purchaser of the pink if only to check Wolves ever decreasing league position
but there sporadic Boxing section turned into a half page and now a full page, it was a special on Marcus Portman last week. It's good for Midlands Boxing in general and raises the profile of a few lads plus has a good world section in it too.

What is the point of a fight that will probably lift me just one place in the rankings. I am aiming for titles; I haven't come back to just make a few quid as a contender, taking the first fight that comes along. If Conway was champion, then that would be a different story.adamiw wrote:ok you may not want to chase a rematch, but if you were offered it, and you had no other decent offers you would take it right?
I assume Jason Cook is in your sights, Dean?Dynamite Dean Phillips wrote:What is the point of a fight that will probably lift me just one place in the rankings. yeah but you cant expect to just jump in for a title. surely if you were offered a choice between Conway and someone else of the same standard or lower you will chose Conway, to avenge defeat.Dynamite Dean Phillips wrote:What is the point of a fight that will probably lift me just one place in the rankings. I know I can't just jump right into a title fight. Realistically, a title fight would be 2 or 3 fights down the line for me. It's only my 2nd fight back after a 5 year layoff; I have got just 6 pro rounds under my belt, so want to keep busy and to keep winning at this stage. Having said that, I would certainly relish a chance to fight for a major title right now against any of the top names.adamiw wrote:yeah but you cant expect to just jump in for a title. surely if you were offered a choice between Conway and someone else of the same standard or lower you will chose Conway, to avenge defeat.Dynamite Dean Phillips wrote:What is the point of a fight that will probably lift me just one place in the rankings. Just fighting someone for the sole purpose of avenging defeat doesn't interest me, unless that person was champion, or the fight was an official eliminator to fight for a major title.
I just didn't like the way the article was portrayed in Boxing News. I have just won the most significant fight of my career. With the odds stacked against me, I came back after such a long layoff and stopped an active title contender in 5 rounds, having had just 1 round of pro action since '98. Bear in mind that David Burke needed 10 rounds to stop Hibbert in a commonwealth title fight. This was despite Hibbert taking the fight at very short notice. I am no mathematician, but surely this suggests that I am capable of beating the top guys.
By the way, does anyone know why I am not getting the alerts for replies to posts in my email?

Sounds like you have it switched off Dean, under "tools" option? Saying that I'm no expert, so could well be talking bollocksDynamite Dean Phillips wrote:By the way, does anyone know why I am not getting the alerts for replies to posts in my email?
The artice in BN was by George Zeleny - didn't he call you then? Because he quotes you a few times in there.
if i was ever in your stiuationand was given the choise between Conway and someone of similar standard, and no higher ranked opponent could be found, i would jump at the chance of fighting Conway.
The fact that you may win easily, wouldn;t that make the victory more satisfying and show that you are alot better than your loss to him suggests. You know you are better, but someone who doesn't know alot about you and steve may look at the loss and make false assumptions.

No, I didn't know the article was going in until someone mentioned I was in it on this forum. I don't mind that, its the fact that he assumed wrong. Like I told Bennie, I am in it to win titles; maybe not immediately now, but soon. I dont just want to make a few quid being a contender for the next few years or more, which is what the feature sort of portrayed. It was also missing a bit.MightyWarrior wrote:Sounds like you have it switched off Dean, under "tools" option? Yes, I would take a fight against Cook.OwainCymru wrote:So if you were offered a bout against Cookie now, would you take it ? and if so , how do you think the fight would go.
Having known Jason as a fighter for years (in the amateurs), I really do believe that he should not be fighting at Lightweight. I personally feel that people would see the best of Jason at Light Welter or even Welter. Don't get me wrong, he has achieved something to be very proud of at this weight, but I believe that it is not his true weight to fight at, and he should think of moving up now. If he tries to stay at this weight for much longer, it will damage his career.
I would be confident of springing an upset. I am a natural Lightweight, never going up more than 10 stones between fight....when in training, I am hovering around the 9 st 12 mark consistently, which means I am always strong at this weight.

You have to have balls and/or lack of brains to get in the ring in the first place.OwainCymru wrote:The comments regarding Jason's weight are all valid; it's common knowledge how difficult he finds it to make lightweight.
Still I admire your balls (or lack of brains ha! ha! - jus' jokin') to be willing to take on Cookie after a long lay off and with so few rounds under your belt. Cook is one tough hombre to take on in those circumstances.
Though as 'J' says it would be a good fight and certainly one I would pay to see.
