David Price vs Tony Thompson seems set for February 2nd!!!!!
David Price vs Tony Thompson seems set for February 2nd!!!!!
Just wondering what peoples thoughts were on this?
Thompson is ranked at number 11 in the word according to boxrec, one place above Price, and ranked at number 2 in the American heavyweight rankings!
However these ranking do seem a bit generous in my opinion! Nevertheless I still believe this is a huge step up in competition for price, and I think Thompson kind of acts like a gate keeper now, meaning if Price is able to beat him "convincingly" then it will put him right into contention for a shot at one of the world heavyweight title belts!

It is a good step up for David Price to see how he would fare against a guy that has twice fought (and got knocked out) for the World titles by Wladimir K. Thompson is a tall Southpaw who has decent power and stamina so should take Price a few rounds, but I still think Price would stop him in the mid to later rounds though.

Good fight and a great test for Price. Thompson is a very awkward southpaw and actually comes to fight.

Odd considering the BBBC asked that purse bids be made on a Fury/Price fight.

I think they have requested negotiations between Hennessy and Maloney start and if a deal can't be reached then purse bids will take place March time. Which is a month after the Thompson fight. As we know the chances of them squaring off early or mid 2013 are very slim.HomicideHenry wrote:Odd considering the BBBC asked that purse bids be made on a Fury/Price fight.
I don't think Fury v Price will happen until one either has a World title or both guys have a loss on their records.

Re: David Price vs Tony Thompson seems set for February 2nd!!!!!
I'v just read again and the board have actually said the fight (not the purse bids) have to take place before the end of March. So we now know for definate, that it aint happening.
Thing is tho, the British title may end up being made vacant, because there might be an angle for the board to say it is Price who has turned the fight down due to having another fight arranged. If Mr Maloney reads this could you confirm that this would not be the case?

Unless Tyson Fury is installed as the mandatory contender for the title should the purse bids be successful, I doubt that David Price will get stripped for the title unless the above happen.jameswilson wrote:I'v just read again and the board have actually said the fight (not the purse bids) have to take place before the end of March. I thought that was what they were doing by 'forcing' the purse bid. Isn't that what they do, they decide their mandatory challenger and enforce a purse bid for it to happen if a deal can't be agreed. Purse bids never happen for voluntary defences.IRLangmaid25 wrote:Unless Tyson Fury is installed as the mandatory contender for the title should the purse bids be successful, I doubt that David Price will get stripped for the title unless the above happen.jameswilson wrote:I'v just read again and the board have actually said the fight (not the purse bids) have to take place before the end of March. Purse bids have been put out in the past for Voluntary Defences both Price's defences against Sexton and Harrison where Voluntarys that were put out if my memory serves me.jameswilson wrote:I thought that was what they were doing by 'forcing' the purse bid. he is at the end of his career and all ready had his last money fight against Wlad why would he come to fight?Karl Jade wrote:Good fight and a great test for Price. Thompson is a very awkward southpaw and actually comes to fight.

As much as I see the fight as a nice step up I also think this. It's classic matchmaking and I can see a Price stoppage. How up for this is Thompson going to be? More up for it than ol Kingpin was for sure but how much more?GanterpBoxing wrote:he is at the end of his career and all ready had his last money fight against Wlad why would he come to fight?Karl Jade wrote:Good fight and a great test for Price. Nice test and great match making. Perfect fight for Price and this step up is just what he needs.
Re: David Price vs Tony Thompson seems set for February 2nd!!!!!
Good luck to David. He's dipping his toe in now.
Shame nobody will see it mind.

I agree to a point but I think this fight is a good test for Price on the level that Thompson is a cute southpaw of similar height who knows how to make the other guy miss and can be difficult to pin down. He also has a reasonable dig and will try and walk Price onto shots, though I'm not saying this will happen.Lenny wrote:As much as I see the fight as a nice step up I also think this. It's a fair enough step up

This would of been a good fight when thompson was semi decent in 2007. Hopefully Thompson will test price before getting stopped.
Re: David Price vs Tony Thompson seems set for February 2nd!!!!!
I can't see Thompson taking Prices power for long, it'll be all over by the halfway mark, probably by the 4th IMO
Re: David Price vs Tony Thompson seems set for February 2nd!!!!!
Good match up - right step up for Price at this stage.
Don't think he will blast him out in 2 rounds but can still see Price stopping him inside 6 rounds with a big right.

It would great to see Pricey getting a load of rounds under his belt but I still want him to knock him out early with a couple of explosive combinations. I know the extra rounds will do him the World of good though, I'd be happy with a 6 round K.O.

Why ent malfoney matching Price against some of Furys opponents ? at least if we see David Price fight Chisora or Kingpin we could gage the gap between Fury and Price
