He wasn't P4P, but he established himself as a top heavy. I almost mentioned Holmes, but he did the same thing.

Hopkins fits that category now I'd say. Still competitive in most every fight, even though I'd say he lost his elite talent a while ago. He's a very rare fighter to be able to compete as well as he does at his age.

Doesnt count hes still in the top of his weight not his fault its considered weak. Mayorga post six heads and Forrest should get a nod he had several high profile fights after losing his dangerous welterweight title.

Fair enough, I'll have to give it some more thought then

Vic Darchinyan was at one time one of the elite Flyweights and Junior Bantamweights...still has remained competitive as a Bantamweight, but not elite.

Liston was still world class top ten up until 1970

Miguel Cotto did well to establish himself as one of the top guys at 154 after bad beatings by Margarito and Pacquiao in 2008-9.

A couple of comfortable wins and a creditably competitive showing against Mayweather put him back up there until Trout handled him pretty easily. He could probably hang with most Junior Middles for a little while yet if he chooses to, without ever being back among the elite.

the obvious one is sugar ray...ray was THE elite fighter but was on the slide from 1950 and very slowly slipped out of competitive standard...12 years or so!

He gradually got fatter as he ate himself up to HW & although he wasn't an elite operator as such, he was still very competitive until fairly recently.

Witherspoon was never an elite fighter IMO. In a world with only one world champion, he would never have been any more than a contender.

Holmes would have beaten him in a rematch, Tyson would have hurt him badly and Holyfield would have given him a sustained beating.

Even if you put my opinion to one side and base this just on the facts. Witherspoon was never #1 in the division and never anywhere near of the P4P top ten.

Why is elite all time? That's a more current term, per division, as far as I'm concerned. Either way, Toney qualifies.

That doesn't make any sense, if you don't equate the term elite to all time status than Toney was elite during his career beyond debate.
