So honest , it's uncomfortable !

Post by dalcumly »

I don't have the vocabularly to do justice as to how tough and brave a boxer Chris Eubank was, and having read his autobiography a few years back, and listened to him recently on TV, including Ringside tonight, I now regret hoping he'd lose every fight!

He's fascinating to listen to, and , yes, his philosophying ( is that how you spell it ?) is a bit bizarre, but he's so honest and perceptive that I can't help feeling uncomfortable. When you consider his upbringing he is a truly amazing individual. His story about the press conference before the Steve Collins fight was just incredible.
As a boxer he was always in top condition; he could take a helluva punch; he was quick on his feet; fearless; and could punch with authority, and he revealed tonight how he avoided so many punches - he was relaxed. When you're tense, either with fear or anger, you simply can't move as quickly.

I'm warming to Eubank !

Eubanks abused his wbo title much worse than Calzaghe did, but when it come to the crunch he proved beyond belief how tough he was and that he could really fight. JC barely lost a round against the inferior fighters were Eubanks often took things right to the wire, remember the likes of Schommer and Amazal

I think the title to this post puts it very well. His honesty in admitting when beaten by the better man - something so few are willing to do - was remarkable. The Steve Collins press conf story was gripping and, again, uncomfortable.

The Steve Colllins press conference.
Eubank was the champ but went to Dublin for the conference. Collins turned up an hour and a half late. He then spoke in Irish gaelic for half an hour ignoring Eubank. He then spoke to Eubank and told him he was a good fighter and a decent human being. All of this had no effect on Eubank. Then he came up to Eubank , looked him in the eye and told him he was fighting for all the Irish people. He said to Eubank , " you're African , what have you done for you're people ". Eubank knew he was a proud Brit, and this statement really got to him. He said he lost the fight there and then because Collins made it personal. It made Eubank want to punish him.

I've always liked Eubank, even when he was playing the villain fighting the british guys.
There's a great clip of him on youtube, a group of lads are having a kick about on a park, Eubank drives his 4x4 onto the park, gets out and joins in the football game, much to the amusement of the lads.

Maybe this will actually mean Collins might get the respect he deserves. Eubank admitted that Collins deservingly beat him twice.

Couple that with Steve doing a damn site better than Watson Mike McCallum and only losing a razor thin decision to Johnson, it could easily be argued that Collins was the best of the fab four

Eubank remains a charismatic individual, undoubtedly one of the most well known British sportsmen of all time. He proved himself to be the best British middleweight and super-middleweight of his era but in terms of global and historical legacy, particularly at middleweight, he does not figure too highly and is regarded by many foreigners as just another hyped-up Brit who failed to prove himself on the world scene.

The original excuse Chris gave for losing to Collins, at the time, was that Steve had undergone hypnosis prior to their fight.

For whatever reason, this seemed to freak Eubank out - I recall him saying how un-nerved he was, as he thought this hypnosis might make Collins impervious to pain - almost like he'd be fighting someone with an unfair advantage.

Collins arrived in the ring wearing head phones, listening to his hypnosis tape - seemed to work well.

I remember this...I was watching last night and I was wondered whether he was trying to change history and leading people to dislike Collins as a racist, without directly saying it.

Eubanks could have finished him in that first fight, he never let Benn or Watson off the hook.

I think you overate how much Steve was hurt. He was caught by a good shot, but let us not presume too much. Collins was an iron man

Yeah I remember him saying this also. He also suggested that the idea of Collins undergoing hypnosis left him concerned because if it worked, and he was impervious to pain, he might take punishment beyond his physiologies natural durability - leaving him open to being seriously hurt. It might have been in his autobiography (cracking read by the way).

I'm sure Collins admitted years later that it was all a load of baloney, and that in fact he entered the ring listening to nothing at all - it was all just to freak Eubank out.

Steve Collins beat Eubank & Benn as they were coming to the ends of their careers,a Peak Eubank or Benn beats Collins imo.The chaps had too many wars before Collins came on to the scene.

I have always like Eubanks, very honest boxer.I remember being in the Audience of the Tv show 'Sport in Question' Hosted By Ian St John & Jimmy Greaves,i think it was 1994.Jimmy Greaves was giving Eubanks a lot of stick for disrespecting his opponents.'Why do you taunt your opponent'' ''why can't you just come into the ring with a towel over your head & stop mocking your opponents with funny stares''

Eubanks did try and defend himself in the Gentlemanly way that he knew. But during add breaks, the discussion was still hot, then
Eubank told him & us that Boxing was a business & to make money,he had to entertain,to put bums on seats & that he wasn't in love with boxing, that it was just a job & that managers/promoters were only in it for the money as well and not for the boxers or the love of the sport which was right but Greavys wouldn't listen.

Probably a little of topic but not many boxers back in 1990-95 would have said that Boxing was only a business to them.So i thought Eubanks was Honest in saying it was to him.

Eubank was no worse at the time then most other defences he made (The numerous robberies in his favour) He just met a man who was able to outwork him while he posed (Like Ray Close, just better) And if he was coming to the end, can people stop going on about what a good victory it was for Calzaghe when they fought.... :TU:

And last night he said he was never trying to entertain, it was because he was a warrior. The guy is set of walking controdictions, adored by people who wish Gladiators was still on on Saturday nights....
