Gay boxers.

Post by Mimmy »

Just looking at the post about boxers who smoked. It seems the norm these days if you are gay you come out. Well there a few football players that have come out in recent years along with some top name Rugby players. What about boxing? Is there any well know gay fighters?

Bloke named Homer Gay had a bout in California back in 1930. In before the joke names start.

Don't think its the norm - don't know if there have been a few footballers...... not sure about Rugby either, apart from Gareth Thomas.

There was that fella the other week - Orlando Cruz or something like that.

Emile Griffith the great champion from the 60s admitted, post career, that he was gay. Back then the stigma attached would have been hard to bear, hence the reason he kept this quiet I suspect.

Why the interest? Would the gay community gain anything from boxers coming out?
Equally what does boxing gain from fighters declaring their sexuality?
Probably nothing in either case.

Yeah its not the norm at all, look at the statistics. Also, what does a thread to do about smoking have to do with a persons sexuality?

I toyed with the idea of a joke about "buying fags" there, but thought better of it.

Anyway
Why do so many people seem to think they have a right to know everything about everybody?

I reckon there's more than you'd think they probably don't admit it because of the stigma and also they'd struggle to get fights, nothing wrong with being gay but who'd want to get beat up by a gay bloke?

I reckon a few Tory peers would probably be into it.

This is very true indeed.

If a fighter "came out" you would never hear the end of it. He would have the permanent prefix "openly gay boxer"

People would not be able to get over it, the fights would become a backdrop to the "spectacle"

Better to leave it in the bedroom / public toilets.

I mean, does everything have to be about everything?

what do you mean "who wants to get beaten up by a gay bloke?"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

are you telling me that you still cannot get around the idea that so called gay people can be as tough as so called "straits" or that they are unable to learn the skills necessary to become decent fighters?

cruz showed that it's no longer much of an issue - his society is far more rigidly conservative sexually than ours.

what year is this?

Think he was talking more about the stigma attached rather than saying they are less able to fight.

ok - but its getting less of an issue all round in my view
