Who remembers this late 1970s Vallejo, CA fight card?

Post by mikeycarmichael »

In 1978, I remember attending a fight card in Vallejo, California and fighters like Billy (the Samoan Assassin) Tavake, Tony Stone, Charley Terrell, and Reynaldo Zaragosa were fighting that night. None of those fighters records from the database reflect the fights from that night and the fight card doesn't show up for "California" for that year. I checked 1977 and 1979 too in case I didn't get the year right.

How does one go about adding a fight card to the records database so all the fights become listed in the individual fighters records? Do I have to retrieve a news clipping from the local newspaper or something that lists the fights? Can anyone out there find any records of that fight?

Thanks.

News clipping from the local newspaper or a California Commission boxing show report will do. (Preferably both.) :D

Zarragoza’s only fight in Vallejo took place on July 13, 1978 which I loaded up on his record.
I will attempt to finish his record later.

well then we're halfway there then. With your help, we now know the fight took place on 7-13-78 and of course Zaragosa wasn't the only fighter on that fight card. So we find proof of the rest of the fighters on the card that night and we've got it. What can I do? I live in Sacramento and it won't be real easy to go to the library in Vallejo and view old newspapers from 1978 on microfische. Any Vallejo, CA readers out there who can help? Thanks.

The California Commission is in Sacramento.
1424 Howe Avenue, Suite 33
Sacramento, CA 95825-3217
Phone: (916) 263-2195
Fax: (916) 263-2197

U can probably view the Vallejo Times-Herald in the Sacramento library.
Or U can go to their site and enquire

Best of luck

If you live in Sacramento, you should have access to virtually every single paper in the state on microfilm, since Sacramento is probably home to the State Library.

I found an article

Post by mikeycarmichael »

I found an article in the 7-14-78 edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. It is titled "Zaragoza Scores KO at Vallejo" and it reads as follows:

"Unbeaten Stockton lightweight Reynaldo Zaragoza ran his record to 18-0-1 last night with a second round knockout of Victor de la Cruz of San Luis Obispo in the scheduled ten-round feature at Vallejo's Veterans Hall. Also continuing unbeaten were Ron Cummings, 144, Sacramento, who stopped Willie hearn, 146, San Francisco, in the second round for his eighth victory and Len Lawson, 182, Oakland, now 4-0 with a decision over Tony Stone, 180, Sacramento in a six. Billy Tavake, 178, South San Francisco, decisioned Charles Terrell, 179, San Francisco in a four."

and there's my proof that the fight occurred. Who and where do I mail the xerox copy of the news article to. I contacted the California Commission and they told me that their records are computerized starting in the early 1990s. With a staff of 2, there is no way they can dig through boxes and look for other proof of the fight card. So the San Francisco Chronicle article is the best that I can do.
