Re: Gary "The Body Snatcher " Reid
He could really fight, was a puncher too, the fact he was good enough to fight for that title says it all.
Short, squat, good head movement, sharp, spiteful puncher.
If he is near his fighting weight I would prob avoid him unless the money is right or your boy is a bit good too.

Re: Gary "The Body Snatcher " Reid
My lads pretty useful , turning him pro at the end of the year and want to match him as hard as possible in the meantime , because at the moment a loss doesnt matter , its not really anything official , hes boxed 3 pro's so far (one of them twice ) , as long as hes learning then thats good , hes beaten daniel thorpe twice (stopped him in 2 rds in one of them ) he lost a very close possibly dubious decision against Kevin Concepcion who was a stone heavier , and lost against a lad from bolton called Danny Boswell , who i cant grumble at that loss , our lad wasnt at his best and according to Boswells trainer that was him at his best , knocked him down but Boswell boxed well .Coco wrote:He could really fight, was a puncher too, the fact he was good enough to fight for that title says it all.

Otherwise its the usual white collar type lads , some have been better than others , hes been boxing 20 months , only had 2 amateurs , white collar record is 19 wins 2 losses , 15 knockouts.
Whats reids chin like ? , his record has 9 stoppage losses on it but were they stopped on feet TKO types or has he been a bit shaky ?
Re: Gary "The Body Snatcher " Reid
If he went close with Conception he certainly won't be out of his depth them.
Catching up with Thorpe is no easy business either. The stoppage losses are as much down to his gun ho approach as anything else, he is an aggressive fighter and was matched tough too. He is small for a welter though.

Tough bugger when fighting at his weight in the pros (9st 9). Would love to have seen him fight Steve Saville when they were both active. Gary can bang and was a spiteful body puncher in his prime. I did always question his engine though. No idea what shape he's in now but he was quite a specimen in his day.

The Concepcion fight was a right pain lol
Took him to a prizefighter for lads between 11 stone and 12 stone (my lad was at light middle then) but we didnt mid some being heavier as if they were typical white collar standard it wouldnt be a prob and the £3000 prize and £500 per ko bonus was very attractive , we get there and find we have concepcion in the first fight , was a cracking fight to be fair but felt we should have got the nod , took a lot out of concepcion and he then struggled in the next fight , looked knackered but won although had been cut so couldnt box in the final , would have no doubt have won the thing if we got the nod against concepcion .
speaking of prizefighters billy, i see andy has now had his first pro fight , as has the lad he fought in the tournament on my show too .

Yes Gary was a very tough kid and I agree a fight against Saville when both were in their pomp would have been a cracker and I wouldnt have liked to pick a winner but I dont think it would have gone the distance I beleive Gary has his own gym now and keeps himself in good shape
Re: Gary "The Body Snatcher " Reid
My Bro Kev Mcintyre fought ried when he was in his " Trying to make Lightwelter days" before the welterweight glory run :) , Ried kept coming but was very short for that weight and was easy to hit outbox,
he targeted Kevs Weak Boady though and got him eventually
if your boy has a bit off height should be ok but Ried is very game and tough as they come

hes not tall but taller than reid , they sound like they have similar styles so its probably going to be a bit of a war i think , but in the time my lad has had his 21 bouts , reid hasnt fought at all , and my lad is a tough guy to have a comeback fight against .Gazmac81 wrote:My Bro Kev Mcintyre fought ried when he was in his " Trying to make Lightwelter days" before the welterweight glory run :) , Ried kept coming but was very short for that weight and was easy to hit outbox,

4 and half years out of the ring , 40 years old and boxing the heaviest lad hes faced isnt ideal for a comeback .
Ill update on how it goes and maybe upload a video ,its on 3rd May

(on past form at least) Reid will be all right hand, Damian, wide overhand shots to the head and clubbing shots downstairs, doesn't do a lot with the left. he's an on-top fighter in the sense that he can't fight much going backwards and his workrate will be shut down when he's pushed back.
he's a very strong man physically, though, and he's dfinitely at his best if he can push his man up against the ropes and throw those bombs to head and body; if your lad stays centre ring and doesn't hang around at close quarters he should be okay.

ps I only ever saw him TKO'd on his feet rather than knocked out, if that helps
Re: Gary "The Body Snatcher " Reid
£3000 prize money?, didnt realize there was that much in whitecollar
i may need to dust down my gloves and move to England :)
dont think the circuit up in scotland is anything like the way it is down your way , seems more off a exhibition type event up here with novices and Celebritys

Plus ticket commision too mate , we regularly have lads clearing a grand on tickets alone for 3 x 2 rounds .Gazmac81 wrote:£3000 prize money?, didnt realize there was that much in whitecollar

Hello Damien sorry to go off topic but I was really intrigued by some of the names your mentioning there on your shows.damianhucker1 wrote: Plus ticket commision too mate , we regularly have lads clearing a grand on tickets alone for 3 x 2 rounds .
Firstly I've watched lots of Gary reid he's a very strong bloke but I'd suggest he's going to be much less effective up at the 11 stone mark. He was an absolute handful at light weight but any time he fought above that he was much less effective. As soon as he was on the back foot he lost all momentum.
What is your white collar boxing policies on drug abuse ( in terms of steroids and the like ) and also how would you cope with a fatality or serious injury? Im interested in what measures you might have in place for those. Is it something you guys consider?
Thanks

As far as serious injury etc we have all the same measures in place as you would expect at a pro show minus the brain scans etc as is the case with the vast majority of unlicensed events , as they have become more widespread over the last few years its not as easy for promoters to take shortcuts as the boxers themselves and the spectators know what they expect to see , we do stop bouts early to prevent people taking too many shots and although its not an official rule the ref we use does use the standing 8 count at his own discretion which i believe prevents people taking too many needless shots too , our ref is excellent and was a fighter himself which i think gives him a bit of an edge to knowing when someone is looking in trouble , you can never be 100 % safe in this sport , even in the pro's , something weve seen recently , but we do try to do everything we can .
Obviously the brain scans are always going to be a big issue and any promoter who can be affording to do them should probably have the funds to do it pro anyway although i do know a couple of guys who have chosen to drop back to the unlicensed as they think its easier to make money but personally id say that shows a wrong intention , of course i want to make money but i want to do a good , safe show above all else , and when i have made enough from the unlicensed ill be turning pro , always been the intention from the start , i see it almost as if im doing my apprenticeship .
As for drugs it kind of goes back to the same thing as the brain scans , im not aware of anyone whos doing drug testing before their shows on a regular basis , but i do know a lot of the circuit works on trust , promoters use gyms where they trust the trainers etc etc , but its never gonna be a certainty of course . i know promoter not too far from me , who only really uses novices on his shows , has done random drug tests via urine samples on his shows but from what i gather he just picks out one name and thats whos tested , but in my view thats just a vanity thing , to say look at what we do , as testing just one guy is pretty futile and can mean certain people can be deliberately not tested. Only thing i test for thats a mandatory thing is that with any female boxers they have to do a pregnancy test at the venue before they are allowed to box .
in the 5 years or so ive been doing shows ive only had one case of a hospitalization of a boxer and that was more precautionary than anything in that our medics took a guy to hospital after a big ko , they just kept him for observation overnight , although i realise its not the knockouts as such that need to be the big worry , its more the guys who manage to withstand a heavy barrage and remain on their feet and take the big shots , they are the guys we have to monitor , and they are of course checked over by the medics immediately afterwards and is the reason we stop fights early , to prevent people being too brave for their own good , we basically acknowledge that although we try to make it look as close to pro as we can , to the spectators , we still have to be vigilant and treat the lads as novices , even the better ones , lets face it i would rather people in the audience moan about a premature stoppage than risk their health for a couple of hundred quid .
an example below is that this fight was stopped on the video below , the loser is an ex pro called Gary Connelly who although hugely overweight knows how to look after himself despite his deterioting skill level , more so than a novice would at least , hes stopped in this bout by a lad having his 3rd bout , on paper that maybe doesnt sound a fair match but we match on ability , and is this proved the ex pro wasnt too much for the novice .
the crowd thought it was premature to stop it but safety was the first concern .
Note this isnt my show but its within our organisation (and i am the ref in that ,not the ref i mentioned earlier)

Thanks for your reply Damien as you can probably gather I'm not a huge fan of unlicensed but that's as good an answer as anyone could hope for.
You hear horror stories about these shows all the time -
More so with Mma and kick boxing. I know steroid and drug abuse is a huge thing in Mma it's almost ignored. I just ask myself what's the point.
Anyway best of luck to you guys and Gary who is a nice fella

You do still hear stories about the unlicensed stuff from time to time but its a lot more rare now than it used to be but to be totally honest i couldnt really comment on the likes of mma as although i know a couple of good mma lads i dont really have any interest in it and only really watch it if ive got a lad boxing on a mixed show .
The thing with roids in boxing is that i dont think it really offers a big advantage unless you really know what your doing with them to exploit certain things , something i do not know about and i doubt most people who take them know either , they probably do themselves more of a hinderance if anything , maybe they benefit a heavyweight by increasing strength and also the intimidation factor if they look menacing but we try to teach people to box and steriods wont make anyone a better boxer , in mma on the other hand i can see that steroids can probably make a big difference due to the nature of the grappling etc on the canvas .

No steroids will greatly help with recovery, training intensity etc etc. Not every steroid user is a body builder marathon runners use steroids too and aren't built like carpet carriers. It makes a huge difference to your ability to train and perform.damianhucker1 wrote:You do still hear stories about the unlicensed stuff from time to time but its a lot more rare now than it used to be but to be totally honest i couldnt really comment on the likes of mma as although i know a couple of good mma lads i dont really have any interest in it and only really watch it if ive got a lad boxing on a mixed show .Jeff Thomas wrote:Thanks for your reply Damien as you can probably gather I'm not a huge fan of unlicensed but that's as good an answer as anyone could hope for.

All about finances at moment mate , had a couple of backers lined up that fell through so decided id rather raise the funds myself and then if it goes tits up then its only my own money thats effected not anyone else's .spudder56 wrote:so Damian when are you joining the Pro Ranks ? The way i see it is that id rather have a go and fail than wonder if i could have done it , theres people who do things and theres people who talk about doing things without ever actually taking the risk .
As daft as it sounds my ambition in life is to have a news flash come up on the likes of sky etc when ive died , ill obviously never know if it happened anyway but my familly would get some joy out of it to cheer them up after ive gone , that wont happen by sitting on my backside , i could just go through the motions and live a boring life but thats not me .
My original aim from the start was always to turn pro in 2014 so that i could build up my knowledge , contacts etc etc and have a few of the unlicensed lads turn over to the pro's with me , but ive kind of missed out a bit there as a few from my shows have already gone pro and a couple almost ready to , remains to be seen if ill join them in the pro's in 2014 , especially now that im getting married in June 2014 too which isnt cheap to do nowdays but im still aiming for it , if i have to delay it til ive got an amount im comfortable with then i will do , i dont want to just get by , i want to have enough to make sure i can beat other people to prospects turning over etc if needed .

Ok yes ill acknowledge that , it does help with the training so can help a boxer that way , im no expert on drug use though , never been one for that , even in my youth , not sure how many 'roid users know the proper ways of using them , id wager that a lot dont .
