AGE WILL NOT WITHER THE GENIUS OF GUILLERMO JONES!
Here's one for the men aged 30 and over who remember Guillermo Jones boxing Boudouani as a light-middle all those years ago.
What wit, what genius, what skill, what brilliance this man so effortlessly employs in the ring.
I sense reading the posts on this forum Jones has probably been campaigning as a cruiser longer than a lot of people here have followed the sport, but from a dubious loss at light middle to Boudouani, to a ripoff versus Johnny Nelson in England at cruiser, to a skilled bashing of Braithewaite, Arslan, Brudov and now Lebedev, here's to the Bard of Boxing, a doff of the cap to an old old man with ringwear, many years and much artistry. He's never been fashionable, he never will be, but Guillermo Jones is a great great fighter.
If anyone else has enjoyed his performances over the years I'd love to hear from them. Hoo ha.

Can't complain about the Nelson fight when he tested positive afterwards.loaded_gloves wrote:Here's one for the men aged 30 and over who remember Guillermo Jones boxing Boudouani as a light-middle all those years ago.

I don't remember that at all. Do you have any proof?
Re: AGE WILL NOT WITHER THE GENIUS OF GUILLERMO JONES
They mentioned it on allegedly a few times during the fight and he refused to take a drug test after the fight tonight. :(loaded_gloves wrote:I don't remember that at all. Do you have any proof?

First I've ever heard of it. Certainly wasn't a story at the time. Seems strange to me. Funny how foreign fighters who aren't supposed to win 'fall foul' of some specimen they left in the hands of the opposition.

Thought it was common knowledge? Well covered in trade papers at the time, nelson talks about it in his book etc.loaded_gloves wrote:First I've ever heard of it. Certainly wasn't a story at the time. Then again many of us on this forum have apparently only followed the sport since Jones has been at cruiser......

Re: AGE WILL NOT WITHER THE GENIUS OF GUILLERMO JONES
That being said. What a scrap. Really hope lebedev is OK with no permanent damage
Re: AGE WILL NOT WITHER THE GENIUS OF GUILLERMO JONES
Disgrace that lebedev was allowed to carry on,that ringside doctoer and referee need to be suspended. How the ref waited till the 10th to invite the doctor To look at the eye and then how the doctor nonchalantly waves it on? Crazy.
On another note jones deserves credit for taking those shots and walking through them seemingly unfazed. Hope it wasn't anything untoward like another poster suggested, lebedev hit him with everything

Better that they make Jones v Hernandez
Re: AGE WILL NOT WITHER THE GENIUS OF GUILLERMO JONES
I'd like to see Jones not take another massively extended break

Re: AGE WILL NOT WITHER THE GENIUS OF GUILLERMO JONES
Can you believe all three judges had Lebedev ahead on points?
Isn't that the worst open corruption?
Incidentally, it has been confirmed Jones did take his doping test. So we can stop besmirching his name now,

Re: AGE WILL NOT WITHER THE GENIUS OF GUILLERMO JONES
Incredible result, the Russians got an almighty shock with their usual cynical matchmaking, bringing in another old man to lose to their superstar ( that supposed heavyweight "title" fight was just god awful ). Jones is something else.....I vaguely remember the drug test thing, now you mention it - and have to be honest, I was wondering how the hell a former light middle was taking lights out shots from the Russian all night, without blinking.
But he seems to just have an incredible chin - how on earth did old David Noel manage to knock him out in 2 rounds ?!! The same David Noel we previously saw splattered over here by Nigel Benn.
A masterful exhibition of pressure boxing from GJones - I've never seen a boxer more misshapen than poor Lebedev by the end - his face was hideous, and his corner need to retire from boxing immediately - that was shocking to let him go on like that.....the ref was too scared to stop it too ( can't blame him, he'd have been shot ) and where the feck was the doctor ? Drinking at the bar ?
Well done Guillermo Jones - he fought like a man who needed to win at all costs, no doubt because he's stone broke from being robbed Don King all these years.

I wasn't scoring it round by round but my general impression was that it was very close. Lebedev was landing with big shots in most rounds. Both fighters deserve tremendous credit for a terrific fight, which is more than can be said for Lebedev's cornermen.

It was a close fight. Doesn't surprise me that they had him up, I had it even-ish.
But it should have been stopped much earlier. Lebedev's corner, and in particular the referee, let him down badly.
The ref wants chucking out. Ultimately, it's his decision as to whether the fight continues.
As to 'besmirching' Jones's name, let's see the results of the test. He's got previous.
And it's all very well Bunce and co. saying "it was a cracking fight on allegedly" but looking at the wider picture, it's a very bad night for boxing when a ringside doctor deems Lebedev OK to continue when he can only see out of one eye, and looks like Joseph Merrick.

really i would say his career has been a bit of a 'what could of been'
He has the talent to of ruled quite strongly in on of the divisions he's fought in, but those long layoffs have hurt his legacy.

How long have you been following the sport, loadedgloves? Just out of interest? Are you a regular at live shows, am or pro?

Come on, Loaded, he was caught as a drugs cheat following the Nelson fight and suspended.
Your post at 01.18 is factually inaccurate.
Im not taking anything away from the guy what he's done since and in this latest fight, but he did what he did.

Re: AGE WILL NOT WITHER THE GENIUS OF GUILLERMO JONES
Hello Mickey - I've followed the sport since the early 90s and go to live pro shows from time to time. Would fancy I have a good knowledge from Corbett and Fitzsimmons to Klitschko and Klitschko but there's always someone who knows more. I honestly didn't recall Jones' doping test at all, seems a few others here didn't either. Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers.mickey1975 wrote:How long have you been following the sport, loadedgloves? Just out of interest? Are you a regular at live shows, am or pro?

Re: AGE WILL NOT WITHER THE GENIUS OF GUILLERMO JONES!
Strange kind of fight,i had Lebedev well up on the scorecards although Jones was well tough seemed to be getting outworked a lot of the rounds but you could see he has got quality i just think he couldve been in better shape,i hope he stays active now
No disrespect but i never had Denis Lebedev as a quitter, but that was one of the worst swellings ive ever seen,up there with Pawel Wolaks eye against Delvin Rodriguez,i agree the fight should have been stopped a lot earlier, disgraceful officiating![[icon_shame.gif] :shame:](./images/smilies/icon_shame.gif)

Re: AGE WILL NOT WITHER THE GENIUS OF GUILLERMO JONES!
It's strange that people had it even or even Lebedev up - his punches were missing or hitting gloves for the most part, while Jones at all time was hitting him to head and body, again and again and again.
The faces tell the whole story, who was landing and who was not. Jones should have been a mile ahead.

Re: AGE WILL NOT WITHER THE GENIUS OF GUILLERMO JONES!
Jesus that is harsh calling the bloke a quitter - fighting through 10 rounds with one eye against a puncher like Jones, with a face that looked like it had been worked over with a baseball bat, and deciding he'd had enough, because he was getting NO help from the cretins around him - thank god he did. I've never seen a face as damaged as that in a boxing ring. He'll never be the same again after that.handsofstone wrote:Strange kind of fight,i had Lebedev well up on the scorecards although Jones was well tough seemed to be getting outworked a lot of the rounds but you could see he has got quality i just think he couldve been in better shape,i hope he stays active now

You couldn't have asked more of Lebedev there. That final punch flush on the swelling was a sickener when you see it in slow motion.
Did Eurosport ever show the Boudani v Jones fights? I never saw them but the idea that a light middleweight could be 6"4 fascinated me at the time.
