Victor Galindez vs Eddie Gregory
Re: Victor Galindez vs Eddie Gregory
Good matchup going in. I liked both guys a lot. Eddie was more naturally talented, IMO, but guys like Galindez could outwork him sometimes

Gregory could've won that fight, too. It's one reason I give Conteh a good chance against Galindez circa early to mid 70's. At that time he had the drive that Gregory lacked, and the skills to match.
Re: Victor Galindez vs Eddie Gregory
Too bad Galindez and Saad Muhammad never fought. That would've been fun.

Ton of even rounds there.
Re: Victor Galindez vs Eddie Gregory
Lord that's a ton of even rounds. I think scoring even rounds is acceptable, but that many?
Re: Victor Galindez vs Eddie Gregory
There was no Argentinian official, right? Sulbaran was Venezuelan.Il Duce wrote:Rover wrote:Lord that's a ton of even rounds. I think scoring even rounds is acceptable, but that many?
Typical Italian/European/Argentinian Scoring...........
Tito Lecture always made sure he had the 'rule' of selecting the Officials.
I went over that bout, and did score many 'Even' Rounds as well though.
'Even Rounds'........1, 2, 4, 11, 12, 14 and 15
Victor Galindez.......3, 5, 9 and 13
Eddie Gregory........6, 7, 8 and 10
Total Points = 146-145 {Victor Galindez}
Round 13, an unfair 'penalty' by Referee - Luis Salbaran, otherwise it was an 'Even' Round
as well.
Victor scored a 'knockdown' in Round 5, so he gets a {10-8 Round}, and he gets Round 13 {10-9}
because of the 1-Point Deduction applied on Eddie Gregory.

Re: Victor Galindez vs Eddie Gregory
I watched this fight not that long ago. Didn't think it was controversial at all. Gregory in typical fashion let himself get outworked, period.

Is it Salbaran or Sulbaran?Il Duce wrote:Correct,
Luis Salbaran {Venezuela}
One Official was from Italy, and one was from Spain.
Had Eddie Gregory 'not' been foolishly deducted 1-Point in Round 13, the bout would have
been ruled a Draw, so he still would not have retained his WBA Championship.
Interesting that Eddie Gregory was ranked as the #5 WBA Light Heavyweight, and was
a fill-in replacement for the hand-injured #1 WBA-ranked - Mike Rossman, who many
felt was better than Eddie Gregory in late-1977.
Angelo Dundee was all over the place in evaluating this bout on Television.
After Round 14, Angelo had Victor up by 1-Point, but then he said whoever won the
last round would be the winner.
Guess he forget that the Champion 'keeps his title' by a Draw result.

Didn't you say you scored it a draw?Il Duce wrote:I'd agree,dempseyfire wrote:I watched this fight not that long ago. Didn't think it was controversial at all. Gregory in typical fashion let himself get outworked, period.
Even Chickie Ferrera (Eddie Gregory's Trainer) told him before Round 15, that he need a 'Knockout' to win.
Eddie was a little too complacent from Rounds 11 thru 15.
