Middleweights: Mike McCallum vs Gerald McClellan
One was a superb and complete Jamaican boxer, (McCallum) versus a dangerous and vicious American puncher (McClellan). This would be called the battle of the McCs...15 or 12 rounds for the World Middleweight Championship. Who wins?
Re: Middleweights: Mike McCallum vs Gerald McClellan
McCallum UD. His chin would allow him to take McClellan's shots, and he'd outskill McClellan.

I agree, either McCallum by UD or late stoppage. He was a complete fighter, and Gerald for all his power was flawed.
Re: Middleweights: Mike McCallum vs Gerald McClellan
I think it goes the distance. I know Benn stopped McClellan, but that was in a different division and after a butt. McClellan had a fine chin.polecateddy wrote:I agree, either McCallum by UD or late stoppage. He was a complete fighter, and Gerald for all his power was flawed.

I don't consider sparring sessions in evaluating match-ups. It's sparring.BarryWashington wrote:id lean more towards a draw
mccallum was great but gerald did have more of a complete game than people give him credit for. dude hit like a monster, had a chin of iron, great jab, went to the body like a savage.
i know its only sparring but u can see when g-man spars james toney that while at moments jt looks to confuse g-man that a good amount of time g-man is able to just throw his weight around and force toney into the ropes and launch combos
i think this fight on pure boxing that mccallum would have a slight edge but its g-man's intangibles of being the bigger more powerful boxer make this a close one

Sparring is sparring; I don't care where it is.BarryWashington wrote:kronk gym sparring and regular sparring are two different things

McCallum by a close decision after coming on in the second half.

I agree. Would be a great fight.Seamus wrote:McCallum by a close decision after coming on in the second half.
Re: Middleweights: Mike McCallum vs Gerald McClellan
McCallum by stoppage any time after the 9th. McClellan had a great chin, but McCallum knocked people out by killing the body. McClellan had too little defence, he'd come on like a madman early, but Mike had a great chin too. It would be a lot less chaotic than the Benn fight, less dramatic too; thunderous shots early from McClellan, McCallum on the back foot but giving back too, but you'd soon be reminded why he was called the bodysnatcher.

Re: Middleweights: Mike McCallum vs Gerald McClellan
I think I pick McCallum here. His boxing ability and resources of getting out of trouble were much better than McClellan's. McClellan would not had a plan B in this fight. Something that McCallum had in his best days. He could adapt and adjust to the opposition. That is why he was so complete.

Re: Middleweights: Mike McCallum vs Gerald McClellan
The Bodysnatcher stops him in round 9. McClellan just have the boxing skills to avoid Mike's best shot and once McCallum realises that, he turns up the heat.
Re: Middleweights: Mike McCallum vs Gerald McClellan
dream matchup. Mccallum was far more polished than julian Jackson. If this match is their respective MW peaks which for Mccallum would be 91 and for mclellan 94 than I think Mccallum takes it on points in a hard battle that takes a lot out of the old man.elmersalsa wrote:One was a superb and complete Jamaican boxer, (McCallum) versus a dangerous and vicious American puncher (McClellan). Re: Middleweights: Mike McCallum vs Gerald McClellan
I'd pick McCallum to take a competitive but clear decision, McClellan would be with him the whole way but for me Mike would pull away down the stretch. I don't see a stoppage personally.

Re: Middleweights: Mike McCallum vs Gerald McClellan
McCallum may have passed his physical peak by the time he got to 160 but his ring IQ and technical skills peaked there, IMO. he showed something of a disdain for getting hit at 154lbs, which he could get away with, whereas at 160lbs he was slicker and cannier.
McLellan can land the odd big shot, here, but certainly he can't put the sequence together to finish Mike, whose consistent output (i'd just love to see the LHW-sized McLellan, drained down to 160, in the last 3 rounds of a 12-rounder, which of course we didn't) would win him something like 8 of the completed 12.

I never saw McCallum KO'd or even down until late in his career at LHW. I doubt I'd see it here. The 1bangkid wrote:The Gman wins by late TKO he is the forgotten man and gets underrated alot was a great fighter and more then a 1 trick pony

Re: Middleweights: Mike McCallum vs Gerald McClellan
I think McCallum's too tough to be knocked out by McClellan, and he's more skilled so I'd favor "The Bodysnatcher" to win via decision. He could possibly stop him late, but McClellan was tough as hell in his own right.
McCallum via Unanimous Decision is the most likely outcome in my view.
